Does Piercing Talon with Ifrit's Harpoon count?
Does Piercing Talon with Ifrit's Harpoon count?
YEEEESSSS!!
They definitely need dragon breath (shout-like abilities) that can do different things. This game is still in its infancy, so the option is not out of the realm of possibility.
I think in this case, it's more like a spear launcher that fires flamethrowing spears. Which is even more awesome.
Speaking of fire, who else kinda wishes DFD worked like the boss's version of it during the 50 job quest(leaves a ring of fire at the impact spot, for those that might not remember)?
Ricard and Kain Highwind from, their respective games, were the only Dragoons in the franchise from what I can gather (unless I'm forgetting someone). And both were Dragon Knights who literally rode dragons into battle.
Everyone else you named are Dragoon-like, not Dragoons, and none, from what I can recall, were Dragon Slayers--just lancers with the ability to Jump as a nod to previous games. Mechanically, Jump is the trademark of Dragoons. Lore wise, Dragoons are mostly "Dragon Tamers" as you put it. FF14 is the first, from what I've gathered, where Dragoons are exclusively Dragon Slayers. We could have seen FF11's wyvern pet as simply a manageable way to follow up on years of lore. I did write this out a page ago.
Could be wrong, but if I'm not, then the more you know.
Your sig and you go well together. Not antagonizing, I just found it a little funny.

If you think that way, no wonder you're disappointed about Dragoons.
You're obviously not a big FF fan cause if you were, you'd know that Jump is the signature move of Dragoons. No other class can do this.
You actually need to be more grateful that they gave us 4 kinds of jumps instead of only just one.
Pet for a Dragoon? Disgusting. Do not want.
While I would LOVE cool new skills (or a Dragon mount, WINKWINKSE)... Nowhere in FFXIV does it claim the DRG is a "Dragon Knight". We are Dragon Slayers, that brutally murder vicious dragons by jumping high in the sky and come down with such force on one tiny point that we pierce the dragon's protective hide to fatally strike vital points. Our class lives up to that, we have jumps (THE most iconic Dragoon skill), and they DO hit hard. They're mostly useless given how they conflict with boss mechanics, but they're spot on with game lore.
http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Dragoon_%28Job%29 <- someone else linked this before and its a good place to start.
Dragoons have been linked with Dragons as friends on several occasions this being FF2, FF4 and FF11.
Now I would suggest the Lancet ability. One of the other trademark abilities a Dragoon learns, attacking a foe head on and restoring a small amount of HP and MP.
SE can figure out if they choose to use Pets/Breaths. I know FF11 had the Dragons use breath powers.
Breaths I could see working if say Ice Binds, Thunder Stuns. Ext.
Pets, it would take to the lore. So it is possible to see them as an add on later and they get tossed the elemental breaths. There is also the fact that in lore the Dragoons wage a war with the Dragons, and then the fact people do use animals. Dragon v Dragon.
I eagerly await to see what comes. Yoshi has already done a great job so far building on what 1.0 left behind. I can only expect great things to come in the future.
Also, Jump needs to be edited so while the Dragon is within a certain height that physical ground, earth based attacks cant hit him, but magical, wind can.
I hate having to cut down and dumb down my posts.
My only beef, jump attacks should be able to be used to escape AoE attacks. Even the evasive jump doesn't work very well in regard to this.
