Sometime after getting some decent gear from those 2, you can do Ifrit (you *can* before there, but you really shouldn't. If you're a 4k paladin, or a 2700 hp healer, you're there too early. If you succeed, you got carried.)

Huh? We did this in AF + lvl 49 accessories without any issue. 6/8 FC run with 2 random pugs no better geared than us. After 3 runs, we had it on farm and haven't looked back. Either you've got a really bad group for Ifrit or just a string of bad luck. Gear is a non-issue on that fight.

Oh, and not to sidetrack you from the broader point of your post, but there is plenty to do in game right now if you're not playing 8-10hrs a day. If you are playing that much, then of course you're going to quickly run out of content.
