Most people don't expect "free runs"... they actually want to participate and do the content. You know, to actually play the game? The problem with mercing (and this was a big issue in FFXI) is that once it becomes popular, it is the only viable option for doing content since whole servers get lazy and just "accept" that you have to pay a fee to do content instead of actually playing it.

I hope SE makes it a bannable offense because mercing was a blight in FFXI and I hope it never gets a foothold in XIV.

They wont make merc bannable. Theres nothing wrong with it and no rules are being broken. In my entire mmo history since EQ1 I have never seen anyone complain about it till now...
