Right now there are approx 50 quests which require you to run around the entire world and take forever to do.
I could probably farm the equivilent of the rewards for 45 of them combined in under 2 hours with a brand new char just by farming marmots.

I don't want to sound like a jerk but have you actually done the quests? What rewards have you got that you consider good?
Best i found were crystals, 14000ish gil and a rank 40ish robe .
Truth be told, I haven't done all the quests, I've done only one and the item I got was a brass choker, which is a pretty good item. I don't want to play until the new battle system is in place. There are some people that don't want to run around farm, they want to interact with the world. To them that's completing a quest, getting a little lore, and getting a reward. Like I said, just because they're worthless to you doesn't mean they're worthless for everyone.

"and i understand the point of them showing the people's average lives. But who cares? This is a video game. its supposed to be epic and cool. Do you really think the 100s of new players joining the game will care about some npc wanting to sell her cookies around town? Fine, if they were creative and had you do different things then it might be ok. But they are ridiculously repetitive to the point where you kill the same mobs in each city for the same basic quest just with a slightly diff storyline."
You do not understand the concept of lore in an rpg do ya. Play Elder scroll games sometime. These games have little to no cs. And nothing but as you put it "useless quests".

You can't fully appreiate the story just by going on the main characters. Even the bit players have their role. Yoshida stated he wanted to give players quests to learn about the cities. And he did just that. Just like how Elder scrolls teached you about the region through various quests. Like "the sunken one" quest. Or Sheragoraths quest.

Call me crazy but I never do quests for rewards. I do them because I like hearing everyones story. No matter how small it may seem. I learn a little bit more of the city, and the people who live in them.

brass choker average price cross server is 5000 gil....
    Thats 1 leve quest easy.

its also not a very good item compared to alternatives. I dropped mine the second i got it. The quest you did was no different from a levequest, just longer. Yes, if you enjoy spending 20-30 min mindlessly running around the map then the quests are great. But most people complain about all the running so its clear the average person is not into that.

and you still dont seem to get the point that most people don't care about little stories. This isn't a thread about what is good or bad. it is a thread about how new players will perceive the game
I like the little stories personally, thats why i have done every quest. But most people don't. Even someone like me who trys to complete -everything- in game and who was prob one of the first people to explore most of the world in open beta gets bored quickly when they have to run around for an hour to complete a quest with 3 lines of dialogue.

What alternatives? That's best neck item you can get until rank 29(if you don't equip items higher than your rank, which I don't). Now I know you're not worth listening to.

at the moment equipping items higher than your rank is a lot better since stats like str and such dont actually matter. The only thing that really should be your rank is your weapon. Also this game doesnt use all neck rings and wrists. you choose between them and theres points that limit how many you can have. neck peices in general arent great. rings are really the best way to go.

edit: its not like ffxi where gear made all the difference. I level most jobs pretty well naked and never even get close to death and never have to rest.

I'm a new player and telling you how I precieve the game... do you get it?

If people have no care on the story then they have no real reason on why they should play this game or not and shouldn't waste their time with rrpg. You clearly are not a typical rpg player. And clearly only targeting non rpg players with this thread. I'm a rpg player.

SE only implemented quests because players were complaining that levequests were too boring and repetitive and wanted stories.
The quests are no different than levequests except they have a lot more running
Some of the levequests actually have more story stuff written in them
So for the average player, this is FAR from what was desired.

If you think that the majority of people playing MMOs want to run around for an hour to learn one little thing about the lore than you really haven't played many MMOs out there.

How many quests have you actually done by the way?
