We watched the Battle of Carteneau from afar. We couldn't take down the transmitter. How could we possibly be of any help in this fight? We did what we thought was best. We fled. We hid from the world, ashamed of our act of cowardice. We abandoned all those who depended on us.
After five long years, we return, hoping to right the wrongs of our past. Perhaps, the people of Eorzea will have forgotten and forgiven our great misdeed...

    guh. Glad that we finally got a answer but me and my boyfriend are pretty disappoint. I don't think Riaa'd have run away from the final fight or anything either, which is the crappiest thing, I so wanted to finish the GC stuff but never really got into a shell until nearer the end and went leveling to 50. I guess though it's in Riaa's nature to be deep in the seemingly biggest glaring pothole from 1.0 now. ^^;;;

Really wish it had been mentioned before now, though, it bugs me a whole since it makes the tattoo useless. I'll get over it and play the game still, don't get me wrong, but boo.

I can't put into words how sad this makes me.. poor Alyshia ._.

And even though I did participate in the Battle of Carteneau. till they shut the servers down. But I guess they couldn't have kept a record of that, could they..

That's actually really lame because the regular story implies you are just some random nobody that's never been Eorzea before. Which anyone that even did the original storyline was definately not

    General annoyances/issues with this -

    1) I haven't found anything that officially stated there was any requirement to "earn" this new intro/story change other than being a legacy character (whether that's just 1.0 or "Legacy" I have no idea).
    2) If the dev team knew, why didn't they tell us? Why be so specific about other one time only items/events/achievements but not this?
    3) Why were people allowed to repeatedly list it as a bug in the beta forums? If the requirement was simply "must have passed <X> to be eligible" why wasn't it mentioned then and the topics closed as "not a bug"?
    4) Why am I and others considered Legacy enough to have our names listed in the credits as a Meteor Survivor but not to get the altered intro/text? How can I be one but not the other?

Obviously it's not game breaking but I feel we've been dealt an unfair hand here - requirements were either never shared with players or were altered without letting us know, and then we're only told that it's all "working as intended" months after we could have done something about it.

As I see it, it was done this way by SE to do something special for 1.0 players. Sadly, without too much thought.

My suggestion how they should have done it:
Instead of relying on only 1 endgame quest to toggle the entire change in storyline, they should have used 3 such toggles for a staggered aproach.

    1. Every 1.0 Char that is not a WoL is recognized by the NPCs you met during the start of the 1.0 storyline. (For Gridania, that would have been Mother Miounne, Yda, Papalymo, Honoraint etc.)
    2. If you met Minfilia in 1.0, she remembers you as well.
    3. If you completed the entire storyline, you unlock the whole WoL treatment.

Not perfect, but far better than what we have now. As to where we were... that is something that is not easily explained in a way that makes sense, since a reason that works for one character rarely works for all. (Not all see their chars as cowards who would run away, for example.)

All in all, a tough spot. And one that could have been avoided. But alright, the bill's passed, so no point in mourning over spoilt milk.
I'll be honest though and say my enjoyment of the game dropped somewhat. (Yes, story is important to me. It is Final Fantasy after all.)

    Without making too much spoilers:

White Raven battle in 1.0 will also affect story segment on Garuda chapter in ARR. Another thing I just found out recently.

I played through the 1.0 main story though. It ended fighting a magitek flying thing in Mor Dhona, followed by a totally sweet final cut scene fighting along side the scions. A forgettable bystander? Please.

Then I finished every side quest in the game. Then they added grand companies, communicating that they were intended to be something extra, parallel to the main story -- not an extension of it -- simply to keep us busy until 2.0 and test out some of their primal mechanics ahead of the re-release. I played through those quests until they ended, beating Ifrit and challenging the Moogles. Then they added Garuda quests. I played through those. Then I was qualified for legacy and the game had run out of content, so I quit a few months before the servers went down. THEN they added the last grand company quest at the last minute, and I didn't see the point in paying to sub back up for one new quest, so I chose to save my money. Had they ever mentioned that they were going to make it a crucial step in qualifying for anything, then I might have reconsidered that decision.

It just feels kind of lame to have this information sprung on us now, after I know I'm not the only person who subbed for several months and played through 99.9% of the game's content only to miss out... while other people who subbed up right at the end, got power leveled in just a few hours, and plowed through a single quest chain get the "legacy" story.

QFT, not to mention that we were branded with tattoos so as to serve as proof of our heroics leading up to the calamity, and yet it's all but ignored and the intended reminder useless? Even if I didn't partake in the final battle against the Imperials, everybody else who survived while sitting at home still remembers each other. Why not even a shadow of deja vu with me? The inconsistency is a stupifyin' thing to ponder.

well, my character did take part in the Battle of Carteneau .... I guess he was just left there to die but somehow survived the battle field, and lost his memory.

I doubt squareenix will do anything to 'correct' this issue, just have to live with it.
they no longer need to worry about a 'failure' anymore given the game's apparent popularity, and we as its players will get less and less courtesies, just be prepared.

I actually completely agree with this explanation for my character as Raithen was dramatically opposed to the Grand Companies and fighting against the Garlean Empire. Instead of fighting in the battle he was definitely off chopping trees and harvesting foodstuffs for the advancement of peace throughout the realm. What a hippie.

Still, I do not like the fact that players from 1.0 were completely ignored because of a Grand Company story quest at the very end of the game.
