Nobody wants WoW, let's just get that out of the way. Everyone calling for new features is doing so out of pure vision for a better future, not as an attempt to change FFXIV for the worst into an outdated game like WoW... or FFXI for that matter. This is what im seeing on the english side of the forums since I created my account today. Now i know there will never be complete unity but this is a major battle that probably won't be won until alot more patches arrive. Me im stuck in the middle i don't know about everyone else. I am a ffxi veteran with 7 years under my belt BUT i have played other MMOs also so i don't completely agree with making this FFXI-2 as some statements lean towards. I don't however want this to be like WoW and be easy mode. I also played WoW for 2 years(even the latest cata xpac). Still not a fan of the game but always felt FFXIV should meet somewhere in the middle. It should give plenty of OPTIONS to level BUT give the best way and most rewarding to those that seek parties. This way those that don't have much time can still progress. This i believe is one of the major factors that allowed WoW to prosper so much(just way too easy for my tastes).
You mentioned new generation in your thread title, and that's exactly the case here. FFXI and WoW are both very outdated when compared to the games coming out this generation.
If i ever reference another MMO for suggestions it is usually only Mortal Online, DaoC, TERA, Guild Wars 2, ArcheAge etc., games which all had or will have certain elements which worked, and which I can see working in FFXIV.
Normally I wouldn't warrant a response like that with a reply, but 169 posts in 1 day responding to posts with suggestions about "reading" when I can obviously read, as I am currently typing..
Wow, now I'm killing dodo's because they are now a nuisance.. OK are you happy?
Try contributing something productive to the conversation at hand, rather than defending a lack of content with statements like "try reading".
I love that his favourite game is that! I almost forgot...There are too many people that played ONLY FFXI or ONLY WoW in their MMORPG career. I might be a little extreme in saying this, but I doubt any of them can really have a balanced idea on what a modern MMORPG needs to succeed and be really enjoyable.
Luckily Yoshida's favourite MMORPG is DAOC... that alone gives me quite a bit of hope for the future.
I wish I could see his love for that game reflected in FFXIV... all I've seen from the latest update is a shift in an opposite direction to what DaoC stood for. With the aggro-indicator, lack of character collision, etc., the game is becoming increasingly safe and bland.

You asked me what changed, and I simply told you with a bit of well deserved sarcasm that now your killing stuff has a bit of flavor and a story added. While it won't single-handedly change the game, I wouldn't say it's a bad thing.Normally I wouldn't warrant a response like that with a reply, but 169 posts in 1 day responding to posts with suggestions about "reading" when I can obviously read, as I am currently typing..

Are suggesting you would like to continue using your common sense and better judgment instead of the game doing it all for you? Heres an Idea, simply move all the dangerous mobs to a dangerous mob zone and put a huge sign that says 'Dangerous Mobs' then no one will ever have to worry again, or simply play Hello kitty island adventure instead. I for one sir have to agree 100% with your statement!
Lol gifthorse i can just say we think very similar whether my posts reflect it or not. I agree with the posts of yours I read even if i wouldn't word it the same. Like looking at the same street from different angles. I compare FFXI vs WoW because they are two games most can relate too, what most know about, and are on completely two different sides of the fence. Things like Guild Wars 2 which i know about(know little of others you listed) is touching on the grey area(or fence) which is my main point for what FFXIV should do.Nobody wants WoW, let's just get that out of the way. Everyone calling for new features is doing so out of pure vision for a better future, not as an attempt to change FFXIV for the worst into an outdated game like WoW... or FFXI for that matter.

People may think from my responses that I'm just a WoW player, but I've been on FFXI for almost 7 years now. However, I've also been in almost every other major MMORPG to come out since 2005 for some amount of time or another. It's through these experiences that I realized how much FFXI was lacking. I still enjoyed it, of course, but that was because it was the first MMO I'd really gotten into, although not the first I played.
Since then, however, WoW came out and changed the MMO landscape forever. I think the responses to the releases of FFXI expansions said it best--they were quite positive before WoW, but after WoW each expansion got progressively worse reviews because of how outdated the game was in the most basic ways. Things like massive unending (and context free) grind, no aggro indication, no jumping, no instanced dungeon content, no natural MP Regen, no new levels, no graphical updates, no soloability, no real feeling of power even after years of playing. I listed things that they have since worked on in their own way, but that's just the thing--for at least the last 4 years FFXI has just been playing catch up at a very slow pace, and so the playerbase has naturally atrophied to the point where they're about to perform a huge server merge this month.
So I pin my hopes on FFXIV. I was incredibly excited when it was announced and looked to finally be in this generation as opposed to FFXI, a game I seemed to be continuing to play largely out of nostalgia. They even said they'd learned from other MMOs as well as their own mistakes and were going to release a better game than ever! And look what we got, a game lacking in content, which not only failed to learn from mistakes other MMOs made but was making ones that the other MMOs learned not to years ago.
I have high hopes for Yoshi-P and the new direction the game is going, and hope he can turn what was an unmitigated disaster for SE into an awesome success story. However, to do this he needs support from a forward thinking community. What will not help is people wanting to keep the game as it is. Nor will it help to make the game FFXI-2, as FFXI-2 was at first a very successful MMO but has, since WoW, become an outdated "also-ran" and is not what this game needs to stand out.
What it does need is radical change to first bring its mechanics into the 21st century, and then build on that. FFXI players have an irrational hatred of WoW (myself included for years), but the game was successful for a reason. There's no need for the game to be WoW with catgirls, but that doesn't mean it should ignore gameplay innovations that have become industry standard just "to be different." They tried reinventing the wheel when FFXIV came out, and look at what we got, a game that paradoxically is extremely hard to get into, but punishes hardcore players for playing what it considers "too much" of the same job, and it ended up losing both groups.
tl:dr FFXIV needs a lot to change, and people who have never played FFXI, or even played other MMOs but prefer everything in FFXI, will probably need to just enjoy the ride or just stick with FFXI. The rage against even minor changes I've seen so far on this forum is nothing short of depressing, not to mention frightening. The game can't be FFXI-2 because the game industry has moved on, and so have its players.

I would put money on most these FFXI players have played another mmo, I know everyone in my ls currently has at least tried WoW.
If they can find a happy medium where the mmo is focused on community interaction and group game play I am ok with modern stuff.
But every mainstream mmo has bastardized group play as just something that is a side item until endgame... which is completely against what I feel is the main things about a mmo the group aspect. That is what kept me on FFXI instead of a jumping ship to a mainstream mmo. I just makes no sense to make a multi player game mainly solo.
I would love leveling to be quest/dungeon based it really does remove some of the grindiness, as long as grouping is used in it. If solo = group in terms of progression though only solo can exist because no one will group because soloing is just as effective and in terns will force all those who want to group to solo.
I feel in this day in age they need aspects in the game to satisfy those who want a solo experience, but I feel that should never be the focus in any part of a mmo. Why I sorta like leves can solo for boosted sp, or group for a massive sp boost.
If they can add say quest with sp where you get 1k sp solo or a 3-4k sp reward for grouping I might be game for having quest based leveling.
They can instance everything at endgame, copy mainstream ideas, and do quest based leveling as long as they do not kill the group focus of the game.
I do not see it as the oldschool are stuck in the past we have just been waiting for another group based MMO for the last 8yrs.

Honestly I would embrace it wholeheartedly if they decided to just turned XIV into a XI-2 with it's amazing graphics =w=
