No, its appalling that a fellow lancer would say such a thing.

Plate offers far better Defense than Scale. Tanks should always be wearing gear with higher Defense. Even if the drop in a dungeon is Scale and happens to be better than their plate because their plate is out of date, that just means they need to update their plate mail _not_ roll on scale.

It's not "appalling from a fellow Lancer". It's a game mechanic that I explained to you, not my personal opinion.

If you want your baddass Scale Gear, look up "Darksteel" it's LNC/DRG specific Scale Gear with Crit and sockets. It's crafting gear. That's what you'd want I suppose.

Also, you don't need all of that Defence in a dungeon, unless you're going to be careless about your positioning that is.

Yea you might not need all that def in a dungeon when you have a CNJ with you but how about the other 90% of the time when your questing solo? Having the highest possible def rating is never a bad thing.

Yes, PLD and WAR are DoW and should might able to roll onto it (actually I think they can't as leather stuff only have dps stats but I could be wrong on this), but for the scale mail items - which ususally have dps stats and less lots defense than what tanks wear at that level, I would tend think that, as LNC fit into the MRD/GLD/LNC category they should be able to roll onto it too.
Now, if you could explain me how http://xivdb.com/?item/2724/Aetherial-Iron-Elmo is a tanking item with tanking stats on it, I might agree with you
