You've never, ever worked in IT have you? I have, guess what, on-call 24 hours a day. Doesn't matter. If my phone rang, I had to go in and fix it, regardless of how long it took. I'd get time in lieu, but when a major issue came up, I was expected to be there until I passed out or it got fixed. If I didn't, I could be terminated for breach of contract.

I know people that do that and I was told the same thing... they may not be at work 24/7 but they are expected to work 24/7 if needed... I'm sure SE is the same way. Whether or not they care to fix things right away is another story.
