Let's keep Character Crossovers from other Square-Enix titles out of FFXIV.

But... that's what they're doing? It's actually her? I really don't know what you mean by "archetypes"--not trying to be obtuse here, genuinely confused. Lightning isn't an 'archetype', she's a character, a leading lady of Final Fantasy XIII. That's who they're bringing into XIV. Not "a pink-haired gunblade user with a bad attitude" or something like that.

At any rate, I've been following this topic off and on since you started it, but I didn't want to come in here just to say "I agree; sign the petition!"

Ultimately, I think I will be quite fine, regardless of what actually happens. This game doesn't have to do everything right. It just has to get enough right for me to enjoy it. But we're all different people. We need to be different. Otherwise, novels would be pretty boring! Or at least, I always think of tolerance in terms of stories. He he.

As long as they aren't persistent entities I enjoy the cameos. We need unique characters to this game to play the major parts in the story, and that's exactly what we have since Lightning is a side quest one off type thing.

Here's the thing about lore and stories.

The great secret is that the developers are in complete control, and they decide what goes in and what stays. There's no such thing as "damaging to the lore".

Mostly a statement and a reference that developers pride themselves in adding what they want into their games. Games you pay for and enjoy doesn't give you the right to mandate what content can and can't be in-game.

If it doesn't make or break the over-all game, the producer will allow it.

Seriously, thanks for stopping by. In truth, we don't know how this will be handled in the utmost detail, cause (1) Yoshi hasn't given his long forum post yet, and (2) the content isn't actually in game yet. Well, if those two things aren't known yet, I hear some people asking, why go to all this length to stir up trouble on the forums? The answer is really because, whatever Yoshi decides to do, I'm against the idea somewhat in principle, and wanted to say as much; perhaps it might get some attention. And secondly, if and when Yoshi does post explaining what he has in mind, perhaps this thread, if it was still a civil discussion and not moderator-locked, could be the place for further discussion to happen.

But I haven't actually said this yet: I do trust Yoshi-P and the dev team, they've given us a great game and worked really hard at it. Not everyone has to be equally satisfied with every single aspect, of course, but I think it's fair to say that they've really earned a degree of trust and respect, and that FFXIV gonna be a great game regardless of this next event.

So yeah, I'm definitely not trying to ruin anyone's good time by sulking; or telling anyone what they are and aren't enjoyed to like about this game; or lying up awake at night thinking about getting struck by Lightning. *edit* see what I did there? It's just my opinion in this thread that keeping actual characters from other Final Fantasies [not shadows/archetypes/echoes, even though I'm not even sure how this would work, but people keep bringing it up so it might be possible, I am pretty dumb] out of FF14 will, in fact, (1) make 14 better for everyone [not just me] even if this isn't immediately apparent to some, and (2) not prevent plenty of references to the series that we as fans love and enjoy, done in tasteful ways.

Please try to follow my argument. "Cid" is a recurring name in Final Fantasy titles, not a recurring character. Cid Highwind from 7 did not show up in Eorzea. Nor did Cidolfus Demen Bunansa from 12. Cid Garlond is a character from Eorzea. So too with the names Biggs and Wedge. They are recurring names, not recurring characters. The Biggs and Wedge working on the Tiny Bronco in 14 are not literally the same soldiers of Gestahl's Magitek Empire who led Terra against Narshe with a slave crown.

So I am not objecting to references to past Final Fantasies. I am objecting to the very characters themselves coming out of their respective worlds and into Eorzea.

I agree. I am ok with the re-use of names as FF has done in the past. i.e. cid, biggs/wedge (which they stole from star wars.) A character named lightning i could deal with, just as long as that npc resembles nothing from ff13.

I really appreciate that you brought this topic up, but most especially, I appreciate that you approached this topic in a considered way. You certainly understand why it is that you find Lightning's inclusion distasteful. That in itself is very different from other threads of a similar ilk. I am not entirely certain this topic can go any further than it has already. It was definitely a thought-provoking read, and as a writer/reader myself, your reasoning behind your hesitance is particularly stirring to me.

I trust that Eorzea will survive this yet! I just hope the loremonger in me will forgive Eorzea for doing so.

This is not the first or the last FF game to have crossovers. Frankly I am surprised there aren't more of them. Unless you mean to say that there are nearly 13 different Ifrits and Bahamut "King of Dragons" running around.

Sure, Gilgamesh can jump from Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy without complaints from anyone. But, heaven forbid, if Lightning does it, it causes some fans to get uptight.

Final Fantasy XIV (A Realm Reborn) is one of my all time favorite games, and I have absolutely nothing against Lightning's crossover to Eorzea, as unnecessary as it may be. You just have to keep an open mind and remind yourself that crossovers in the Final Fantasy multiverse is not impossible. (Gilgamesh does it all the time.) Even though I understand your concern on this crossover damaging the quality of the game's lore, I believe it does not do so in any way. This is a Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy crossover! It's not like they're bringing Star Wars characters into the game. And this is the Final Fantasy franchise we're talking about! It can stand on it's own without having to rely on crossovers, unlike the Soul Calibur series.

I personally think Lightning's crossover to Eorzea is actually interesting, and I look forward to fighting by her side. (Lightning's gunblade will be mine!)
