There's no "giving away too much" when a company is trying to get back trust it squandered, and Square Enix did exactly that. This is what boggles my mind of this. People that think that "giving too much" to customers is a bad idea. The more you give, the more you'll receive back, unless of course you go to extremes, but we aren't talking about extremes here.

Two weeks more of gameplay would definitely not influence Square Enix negatively, but would send an entirely different, and much stronger message. Strong messages are good for marketing, and marketing is good for sales.
Haven't they already sent a "strong message" by allowing those who already have the game to not have to pay to upgrade to an entirely different game, as well as allowing a 2 week free trial to those exact same people? Again, it's not all the bonuses we want, but it's a helluva lot. Sure, I'd love a month of free trial. But my "disappointment" is more about me definitely wanting more if I can get it than it is about SE actually making a bad move on their part. People who are on the fence about whether or not they want to play the game get their free trial to decide, as well as don't have to pay for the game. That's not bad, Abriael. Not bad by any means. Sure, hey can always give more, but like I said, even bonuses to customers have do have some sort of balance to them. I, personally, don't think offering two more weeks would make much of a difference anyway to 1.0 owners.
