In every single piece of communication from Square Enix itself the "free trial period" unequivocally refers to the period after the launch of Final Fantasy XIV in which people that purchased the game didn't pay monthly fees.

In no communication from Square Enix "free trial period" refers to a beta.

It's their definition, in their official cummunication, Not my interpretation.
