I don't think it was too early. If you think about the timing really, November would be the safest month for them to do the character conversion. December was Alpha/Holidays, and Alpha itself was a lot of feedback I'd imagine, a lot for Yoshida and the devs to deal with.

Then January was a lot of prepping for Beta, and doing various PR. And now of course, with February, MASSIVE PR and the start of Beta (which was like literally opening the floodgates)

The team has been in overdrive pretty much since 1.0 shut down, and any later than November probably would have not been good lol.

That being said, I loved 1.0 despite the poor server structure, and there are things I'll dearly miss. From what I could tell of the Alpha videos, my favorite spot in the Shroud is gone ;_; Ah well, here's to hoping I can make some new memories in ARR.

I do feel the gap between 1.0 shutting down and 2.0's launch is a bit much, but I understand why they did it.

Doing so meant no need to use resources to provide updates for a "doomed" game anymore. And though there are folks that would keep playing without any new content, IMHO if SE had said that they were going to cease updates but still keep the game running (with character saves and all) then the playerbase would have gradually dwindled even further. I think it is better that 1.0 went out with a "bang" rather than a whimper, y'know? A relatively quick death, I suppose. xD

Shutting down 1.0 probably helped enable their 2.0 marketing as well.

I want to reply and if this has already been said I'm sorry but I havent seen it here yet. I see this alot with, why does SE need so much time to "copy" over my data. Well I want to say that SE isnt "Copying" the data, they are transfering it. ARR is a game that has been rebuilt from the ground up. And so with that said, ARRs coding is much different from FFXIVs coding. its not a mere copy/paste job. They have to go into old formula and translate every character and items they own into new formula. Its not that easy guys seriously. It would be like taking a WoW character and transfering it to TERA.

I guess the reason it shut down so early was because they wanted to get the "final event" out of the way, which wasnt exactly must-see material anyway, so I dont get why they were in such a rush to let players experience that.

They definitely could have kept it up all this time for people to enjoy. Transferring data can't possibly take this long, even if they had to do it pains-takingly by hand, every individual bit of info at a time, which is just an implausible concept anyway, but perhaps the only justification.
The final save and End of an Era events happened on schedule according to the roadmap that Yoshi P initially laid out... despite the release of ARR being pushed back.

If they had pushed back the 1.0 shutdown as well, they would probably have needed to allocate development resources to producing Halloween, Christmas, New Year's and Valentine's Day events as well as possibly content to drag out the Dalamund storyline for another few months to keep players busy. I guess they were not in a position to do that.

That being said, I sorely miss FFXIV and wish the gap between 1.0 and ARR wasn't this long. I had intended to keep playing FFXIV after Nov 11... but hardly anyone was around and so it was pretty pointless.

I'm also a bit concerned that some of our LS members seem to be losing interesting in ARR.

I have to disagree with this because while 1.0 was not liked in its entirety by anyone but the climb they maybe with changes to 1.23 revived alot of faith in their fan base as well as the direction the game was headed. The idea of 2.0 would not have had as much support without the climb and even more so with the tag line still being 14 instead of 15. People will always remember the bad but the links in history leading up to the next good are just important much more so when you are living on faith which SE did with this project instead of cutting loses. In video games and in software industry in general that is rare.

No one ever mentions this but beside just transferring our characters they are also getting rid of a lot of items and making dated items obsolete. I'm not a computer person but that sounds like a lot.

Lets not forget that the items that will get removed will each equate into into gil. They may have even made the value of gil dependent upon the rarity of the item. So an arrow that has the best stats could easily lead to a fortune for some...

I have been able to crush my withdrawal symptoms by purchasing a PS vita with BlazBlue. THIS GAME IS SO FUN! Go ahead and take another year with ARR, cause that's how long it'll take me to get all these BlazBlue trophies.

That's unfortunate, however, when an MMO generally fails they normally don't keep the servers alive for 2 extra years, let alone making updates to it, so having it shut down "prematurely" is a bit of a stretch at that point.
