^Exactly this. When I read the article (maybe it's just me), I got the impression that the author was imposing his opinion on the reader, rather than let him form his own. ARR is still a game that not many people are aware of. And this media tour was supposed to inform people by making it all over the media, making it's name familiar, etc...

The purpose of these articles is to help in doing that, but it's not supposed to be in such a biased way. The author is claiming that the game has no clear direction (which is not true, the devs are already talking about an expansion), and that it's better than the previous crap but "meh". He overlooked all the systems and features the game has to offer just because of his "oh well, people moved on" concept.

So yea let people make up their own opinion!

The fact that FFXIV has a good storyline doesn't make it unique.
Honestly, if you're comparing FFXIV's 1.0 story, which they made up in a month, to the stories of these other titles then FFXIV already wins. The cut scenes for this game were being done while they're making another MMO, AND doing other stuff for 1.0. Those other companies had years to make up their stories and put them together.

I am not comparing. I am saying that story in MMOs isn't something unique that ffxiv is bringing to the table like some people are saying. Its been done and done quite well already.

Yeah, but it's a risk I'd love to see MMO games take more often. In many bog-standard ones the Leaders and enemies stay the same for the next 1000 years, the cities stay the same, with often no way to change it easily, or fight said change with player involvement.

Changing the world is still a novel thing to do. and still an expensive gamble for any game company, on top of the gamble that comes with most MMOs. I'm not too privvy about what happened prior to the events of Cataclysm, but I loved the "7th Umbral Era" events that wrapped the ever present doom of Dalamud into more and more story as we attempted to stop it, like in countless other games before.

I wonder what the limbo bit is like, though...?

I find that regardless of the genre I am pretty much done with critics.

When I go to movies I just pick the ones I like based on the trailers and who is directing/staring in the movie. I have great success with this and that's enough for me.

Games are the same way. I look for who is producing the game and what key people are involved with the project. I will play it until they produce something that's not for me and unless they address the issues I have, I will not come back. CoD and Battlefield are examples of this and in my opinion they have gone more towards money making schemes and away from quality.

Final Fantasy XI was a great MMO and the one I played consistantly. FFXIV was disapointing to many but I enjoyed it from the beginning and for me it only improved as the game went on. What I want to know is where are the people taking note of the fact that very few, if any, companies will listen to the players and drastically change the content of a game that they and the player base felt fell short of their expectations.

That's what I feel Square Enix did with this game and I eagerly await the launch of ARR. They have my support for a great game and will continue to have it.

I thought it was pretty insulting to only call it an MMOG when the game is being touted to have very strong story elements.

Graphics, stories and consoles are not distinguishing features of games in general. A great many games have graphics, stories and console support. Some even have all three. The author asked what makes XIV stand on its own--distinguish itself from other games and MMOs out there.

Yoshida's response was unclear (in the narrative of the article) because he touted things about 2.0 that you wouldn't expect to form the centerpiece of SE's big reboot gambit. SE isn't trying to break new ground in the genre; their selling point is sticking to the fundamentals and precedents other games in the genre have already set. As a result, Yoshida's rhetoric is more down-to-earth than the jingoistic game-hyping we hear everywhere else.

You could say, in other words, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn isn't trying to be that much different from other MMOGs--it's just trying to be different from Final Fantasy XIV as it currently exists.

    Huh.

This is true and considering how far we have come with him I appreciate that he's laying it down like it is. The last thing we need is another disappointment from any angle. I understand it's important to build hype but I think FFXIV is a special case and that while Mr. Gamespot writer may not have been blown away by no promises to revolutionalize anything, at least there's no grand expectations that you can't meet either.

It gives room for ARR to impress or at least please at launch compared with 1.0's dismal reception.

This game isn't really offering anything unique other than the FF name and charm. Which for most of us is good enough.
Yes I found the article to be cautious if anything. It's like he wanted to like the game but at the same time he's leaving himself a way out so that IF the game tanks then he can say he was fair about it and didn't sing it's praises. In his boat it's a smart move for a site that caters to many types of gamers, many of which never touched a P2P MMO before. (If I look at those comments and considering I've been a member of that site for a long time....)
