Gamespot ARR article. HOW DARE YOU DOUBT OUR YOSHI-P!!

He name-dropped World of Warcraft for its user-friendliness and enduring popularity; Warhammer Online for its system of public quests; Dark Age of Camelot for its player-versus-player content; and Guild Wars 2 for the way it made its map part of the exploration and questing process. When I asked him what makes Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn stand on its own, his answer wasn't as clear. He mentioned graphics, he mentioned the game's three story layers, and he mentioned the focus on console players--but not much more. In fact, he suggested that the idea of uniqueness among MMOGs is a bit of a misnomer and that most such games iterate on what came before rather than redefine the genre.

In other words, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn isn't trying to be that much different from other MMOGs--it's just trying to be different from Final Fantasy XIV as it currently exists. It's hard to say at this point whether that's enough, though Square Enix certainly hopes so. Yoshida steadfastly claims that the company is "putting everything" into this project and that it will never give up on a Final Fantasy game. Unfortunately, a lot of players have already given up on Final Fantasy XIV.

THE STORY!! Final Fantasy has always been known for it's awesome storytelling. We got an awesome story for 1.0, a game they're going to let go. That's what's making me really looking forward to what's coming in ARR.

So what's special about FFXIV that most other MMO's fail miserably to deliver? STORY!

    Yoshi-p you tell them that!!

Expect more articles like this from Game Informer too. They've been bought out by Blizzard it seems.

I normally like the reviewer guy as well. But I was disappointed in his view.

I'm willing to agree with the Gamespot guy on this one. It sounds like Yoshi-P wants to make an orthodox modern MMO to a very high level of quality. It's probably hard to point to individual things that would make XIV:ARR different from other successful MMOs, especially if you consider XI. It looks like it takes ideas from a number of MMOs, and what probably will make it different is the inclusion of these many things altogether as opposed to being the trailblazer for any one thing.

Otherwise, it's a modern FF MMO, which may be the only thing it needs to be.

What Yoshi says about "uniqueness" is true. Everything created builds upon existing sources and influences...this guy is a moron for not understanding him lol

So, he indicates that Yoshi-P's answer "wasn't as clear", and then goes on to "fill in the blanks" with his own explanation.

    Well, isn't that convenient.

Yoshi gave a very honest answer, frankly. Where most other MMO developers/PR would have a ready-made, canned response filled with marketing spin and hype-injected, quotable catch-phrases, Yoshi gave a very down-to-earth and realistic response. Most MMOs are iterating on concepts and systems that came before them. That's not where the magic is, though.

The trick is in how they're presented. Questing is Questing is Questing, but it can be handled in so many different ways, with some approaches being more fun than others. Killing mobs is killing mobs is killing mobs... It's how the combat feels and flows that makes the difference from one game to the next.

It was an odd question to ask, and answering it is difficult without inviting some sort of snark.

Yoshida does have a point, though his view also spans most of fantasy in general.

Depends on what level of storytelling we're talking about. If we're going overall story and use of setting, then yes FF wins. I've always been iffy on personal story, but then again, players are responsible for creating the stories behind their characters.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
