This is exactly what i got from it too and its all we can really say at this point. Before people start panicking and losing their shiznet, lets wait until someone has at least had a chance to try it. I would not be surprised if there was a little lost in the translation from Japanese to english, english to an experience, an experience to an article, then an article to the reader. i dont think that the writer of the article got to try fisher even so we really have little to go on.

To address the "going the opposite direction" part, I take 1.0 as the base, look at the crafting video of the direction they are heading from 1.0 to 2.0 (which is less of a hot and cold thing, more streamlined, easier to understand, able to get consistent repeatable results.), and then they say fishing is going in the opposite direction (this to me means it will be a better mini game, keeping the hot and cold mystery aspect, keeping things random, and less predictable.).

If you receive an actual item from fishing, It will have a use in the game, bottom line. The only way they could make fishing as useless as you seem to fear would be to remove the actual catching of a fish and putting it in your inventory. With nothing in the inventory then it truly would be just a hobby.
