Except ES is a very popular and successful western RPG series much like DQ is the more successful and popular JRPG in Japan. FF isn't as big as you think it is. It's popular but what recent ES game gets the most praise as 'best rpg' despite having quite a few flaws that people willingly overlook?

It was so funny when i read the last producer letter from Yoshi P. that he was a big fan of Dark Age of Camelot (EA Mythic, released in 2001/2002?)..

I was like "Lol, i thought these japanese guys play JRPGs all day long". and then i was like "wow Yoshi P. is really the best for SE to direct a MMorpg like this. He has real MMorpg experience. DAOC was aussum"

DAOC was my first MMorpg by the way. and i liked that it didnt had that "linear" stuff that we know from other MMorpgs these days... it had great 3 faction openworld (!) pvp also in seperated frontier areas. maybe yoshida wants to introduce something similiar for the public companies, who knows. (although i think TESO will be for for the pvp player base, because matt frior, the founder of DAOC is producing it)

i really dont think that TESO is becoming something linear and instanced like SWTOR.
(like everybody talking about that in here)
because it'll be much, much more openworld. and when we have seen the last MMO that really offered openworld? the most MMorpgs played around instances (which isnt a bad thing, but for pvp it is in my opinion).

i really see the potential in TESO to become a real different (more oldschool) feeling like DAOC.

well i think im ending up with playing both. at least testing TESO out. On the other hand FFXIV ARR is going to be the more story and franchise bound MMOrpg. I mean to fight shiva, omega weapon and so on is just freaking awesome. and i think FFXIV is going to cater the PVM player base much better.

That's your first mistake. There's tons of Japanese patches for games that never make their way to Japan much like there's tons of english patches/ssn generators/vpn methods for Chinese/Korean/Japanese games for the same reason.

well let me say it this way. at least not the wide audience of japanese players play -very- western games like DAOC.
it also has been released in Asia.

but i havent really thought about yoshida, a director of Final Fantasy playing it back then.
it was funny to read and a reason to like him even more.

the problem is that people like TES etc, cause they think it looks good with realistic textures...but it's just ugly models with textures on them, that only makes it ugly. especially chars -.- they look horrible. if they wanna use realistic textures, at least they should have high poly models. Worst part is that all chars look like they got bark instead of skin.
I dont know what's more exiting; TES or waiting for someone that is late, for hours.

    TES:

    Mods fix everything.. :P

Almost a mod for every issue - not that Bethesda relying on the community to fix everything is good design like animation bugs or messed up seams (good for their budget maybe.. :P).

You do need a solid computer for this stuff (more so for that last one, 1000$ computer in the last year or so should do).

    TESO:

Is being designed by Zenimax Online so the "bugs" joke doesn't really apply (yet?). We can already see their graphics though. I've seen a few screenshots look really amazing, and others look like WoW or Aion with slightly better graphics..

A compliment for them is it seems their grass is good :P - using better res translucent grass, unlike ARR's (though most games coming out are doing this, GW2 is even physic'd flora). You hear me Yoshida!! *shakes fist* Your grass is old! ... lol

it shouldnt require community to fix all that
i only played Skyrim for a few mins, then i got driver sickness, and sickness from ugly graphics ^^ so dunno how these mods work, but seems bothersome to find mods, to be able to play the game properly...that's the devs job.

To me, Elder Scrolls Online and Final Fantasy XIV, while both MMO's, are really apples and oranges to me. I don't even really think they will be competing with each other. If anything, Elder Scrolls has it's sights set on WoW, which is almost impossible to overcome. While Elder Scrolls has a big name behind them, don't forget that so did Star Wars, and we all know how that went. If Elder Scrolls is to succeed and not eventually become a F2P, it doesn't have to be 100% different, but it needs to bring something to the table that other MMO's simply cannot give. Unless I am proven wrong at release, I have a bad feeling that Elder Scrolls will blow up at first, then eventually drop to the point that it is a niche community.

FFXIV is in an interesting field, one that doesn't have high competition, the console market. This was something that was also very appealing for FFXI at the time, and was a major success due to it. Then you ask yourself, "Not many people will want to play on a console to a PC.", which might be true to an extent in the west at least, but I have a good feeling the console subscribers will shoot sky high in Japan. If Dragon Quest X was on PC and Wii, I am willing to bet the higher number of players would be on the Wii. For reasons I won't ever really know, consoles are simply just more appealing in Japan, even if it is lower in specs.

For FFXIV's numbers? I think it will be successful enough to stay in the playing field, I doubt it will ever go F2P. My guess is that it will go between 1.5-2 million players and possibly grow more in the future. If Elder Scrolls is successful enough, I think this number range will be the same for them also. There are so many MMO's out there now that I don't think getting WoW's numbers are realistic. WoW was there when the MMORPG genre was getting popular. It advertised itself right, there wasn't much competition at the time. Nowadays there are so many MMO's that the communities are spread out, making it almost impossible to reach WoW's numbers again.

Even WoW's numbers are dropping slowly as time goes by. Once at 12 million has now gone below 10 million. Mists of Pandira is a neat expansion and all, but it is extremely boring feeling compared to previous expansions. It just could not hold my interest and was falling asleep doing the quests. From going to a different world, to fighting the Lich King, to surviving a cataclysm, to pandas in a boring area....it is just simply unappealing and underwhelming, and some feel that way also. Seriously, Blizzard has such an artillery of interesting villains in the Warcraft lore and it decided to do this, it is just disappointing feeling.

Both Elder Scrolls and FFXIV could benefit from this opportunity and give bored WoW players something fresh. I know a friend of mine who is a strong WoW player who admitted that FFXIV looks really appealing now and may drop ship (He use to live to bash FFXIV.). Both FF and ES are strong IP's and can pull this off. Will it be many? No, barely if anything.

Like I said though, Elder Scrolls and FFXIV will probably both take different routes to appeal to certain people and become more successful than titles like Rift, Aion, and Tera at least.
