As I've said before, it really depends on the in-game benefits. In America marriage has legal benefits like a lower tax rate. If there are no benefits besides a ceremony, many players will end up holding their own.

That being said, I'd prefer that same-sex marriage be allowed. It's not like you really noticed marriage all that often in XI. It took place in areas that wouldn't conflict with others' gameplay (such as the mansion at the far end of Southern San d'Oria or the top of the lighthouse in Gustaberg). I actually missed the one wedding I knew about, and never saw any others before the feature was discontinued.

And again.. So now we have to have tax rates and what?
I have to file income tax in game every year and wait for my return?
Do I have to tell them how many people in my "IN GAME" hosehold are dependents and how old they are, how many there are?
This is not "real life online"....
If it becomes anything even remotely resembling that, it will fail miserably.
If you want to play "Hello Kitty I got married online and made a family and paid taxes"
    Go make your own game..

    Hello Solice.

I'm sorry to hear that you had trouble understanding what I wrote. Let me see what I can do to assist you today.

If you take another look at the first sentence of my post again, you'll find that I said that your point about not wanting marriage in game was "fair". I don't know what alternate meaning these words might have for you, but normally it means that while I don't necessarily agree with your opinion, it had merit. So to answer your question:

    That's right, you did not.

    You forgot this part:

"is not a free pass to say whatever you like about the whole community without fear of being called out on it"
Correct. Do you happen to recall why I said that? Because you were trying to use your relationships with your LGBT loved ones as evidence that you weren't "bashing" (which you weren't doing... it's a little concerning that I actually feel I have to remind you of this).

The point is that many people who bash the LGBT community (not saying you are, lest you forget that) say that they have gay friends as a way to try to get out of being called on their bashing. Contrary to your implication, having friends and family that are LGBT does not mean you are being fair minded (again, not saying you weren't fair minded, in case you forgot already) when it comes to LGBT issues.

Solace, I don't think you're reading things very carefully. Yrusama was saying that there should be in-game benefits to being married. He only mentioned tax benefits of an example of a benefit to being married in America. He was using a real world example to explain why having some kind of benefit to being married in game (whether it be a ring that teleports you to each other or whatever) would help keep in-game marriages from feeling pointless and out of place.

You really should try to relax.

We already have taxes in game, like GST (not sure what other countries call it but the tax we Australians pay for buying goods and services, like when you buy something from someone's retainer via the market wards interface you have to pay an extra few percent of the price up to 4k per item) and I think there was another one too, but can't remember it off the top of my head. It would be nice if we could get out of paying that if we were married :3

Thanks, Keisuna. You clarified most of my post.

I actually meant that if there are no benefits beyond silly outfits and signed rings with no stats (like the XI marriages), same-sex couples won't miss out on much. They can hold their own ceremony.

I think custom, player-run ceremonies would be more special. Why restrict yourself to certain outfits and locales when you can have your marriage at Mih Khetto's Amphitheater wearing an outfit tailored specifically for you by friends? Your best friend can be the minister and arrange seating. It's arguably a more wonderful experience than any cookie-cutter marriage coordinated by some overworked GM.

As for shared housing... I'm sure everyone at SE has heard of a roommate. Restricting shared housing to married couples doesn't exactly help the immersion factor.

    Fictional characters in a game...

plus whos to say that races within the game itself would not go into same sex marriage willingly as part of their culture.

the rules have not been defined and nor should they be, i am all for it if people want to them just let them.

Not enough flaming on the forums as of late. We need to bring this topic back up so that people who have no lives can go at each other's throats over nothing some more. lol
