I'm studying engineering as you can probably tell... ^^Don't get a job in business.
What you're assuming is that the average consumer is going to play without any breaks for over 10 years.
Even if that was the case, you would never give the actual figure that would be worth. People sell "lifetime" bundles at a significantly reduced price. We're talking about a subscription to an online game here.
Also "for the quality of the game", the game isn't out yet. Considering the reputation of the game, it is one of the most despised MMOs in the world on a global basis. Its reputation is horrendous. I'm sure ARR will be great, but who knows if it will fix the horrible reputation 1.x put forth.
An apology is not owed just because it's demanded.
Only, that's not what it is. And ALL companies benefit from large quantities of money dropped on them all at one time. No matter their solidity. Even more so publicly traded companies, as income attracts investment.Annnnyways, forget about it. Like I said I feel this would be a "last resort" move if they really needed the money in bulk. I just don;t see the need for them to do it as a company, that has it's head well above water.

It's how I feel the term Lifetime Subs is to me. Opinions are wonderfulOnly, that's not what it is. And ALL companies benefit from large quantities of money dropped on them all at one time. No matter their solidity. Even more so publicly traded companies, as income attracts investment..
Your right as a Customer Longer + Cheaper= Better I agree with you. and it doesn't hurt to have that option you are right about that as well. I just feel if I was in their shoes and I was making money off a MMORPG, I wouldn't put a Lifetime option.Another reason to buy in bulk... On top of Legacy discount, it would probably save 100s of money in the long run
The longer the better. I was disappointed when 6 months was the longest sub. You have to look at the advantages. It's not a bad thing to offer a lifetime sub. After all, it's an OFFER: most people won't take it probably because it's expensive, but it's all money in the bank. It won't hurt anything.
The longer the Sub plan the cheaper it is ( for Most MMORPGs that aren't free). They are banking on if the Customer is going to stay and play for a long time or cop out early. That's why I feel it's a Gamble for SE to offer it.. BUT if they do offer it.. of Course I wouldn't pass it up. =)
Two consumers purchase "lifetime subs" at $300 each. The total comes to $600. Square Enix now has $600 in revenue.
Standard option - $15/m
Month 1) $30 2) $60 3) $90 4) $120 5) $150 6) $180 7) $210 8) $240 9) $270 10) $300 ... ... ... 20) $600
1 year 8 months worth of subscription fees. It would of taken Square Enix 1 year and 8 months to collect the revenue matching those two lifetime subs. Square Enix can't even guarantee those two players will stick around that long. The likelihood those two players would of quit for any amount of time in between that is over 60%.
When someone has a lifetime membership to something they don't feel inclined to use it all the time, so they are more likely to take breaks from the game.
Furthermore, the average consumer is far more likely to leave the game early. Hardcore players that stick with a game for every single month of its life are few. Go look up statistics for any MMO.
In addition, Square Enix isn't creating furniture or selling food. To create furniture, you must purchase materials to build furniture with, so you have to at least break even on your materials cost. For food, all the ingredients and condiments associated with it along with packaging cost money. Square Enix is selling access/data. The only money directly lost is how much data that consumer is using (therefore the more often they play the more money they lose). Since lifetime subs are more likely to play the game less, and Square Enix already has a huge chunk of change from them, they are actually making more money.
It is going to be a VERY rare case that a lifetime sub will play every single month for 10 years. Even if that happens, Square Enix won't be losing that much money considering how many people would of bought subs and how many active subscribers they already have. Those very active consumers would probably be a positive force in the community and be assisting in maintaining an in-game economy and making other people stick around longer.
It's not really a gamble. The customer will only see savings if they stick around... if they don't they may have just paid MORE.Your right as a Customer Longer + Cheaper= Better I agree with you. and it doesn't hurt to have that option you are right about that as well. It's as close to a win-win as there ever will be when it comes to P2P MMOs
I would pay $200-$250 for a lifetime sub. That would be the the max I would pay though.
Does WoW, one of the most successfull MMOs nowadays, has a lifetime subscription option? No .... guess why
