Making people feel unwelcome is a big problem in the RP community as a whole, not just in the RPC, and I don't fault you for wanting to go to a website where you feel you are welcomed. The reason this new website upsets me is because it takes the rift that's already there and widens it by forcing many newcomers to chose a 'side' whereas they might not have done so otherwise.

Lior can talk about how this isn't his intention until he's blue in the face, but it won't change the effect. People tend not to frequent more than one community website unless said community websites serve some kind of different, but essential purpose in the community. If we don't socialize oocly, we're less likely to roleplay ICly, and now the amount of people everyone can play with is essentially cut in half because a few people on each side can't get along.

It's just really unfair to everyone else who isn't part of this fight.

I can agree with that, yet it also allows people who previously wouldn't RP because of this unwelcome feeling to have somewhere to go. Intentions aside it provides a place that more RPers can come out of, and some people may feel comfortable to continue RPing.

I realize that, I just wish it didn't have to happen at the expense of alienating existing roleplayers.

This is a very valid statement as was the quote it quoted. It happens everywhere but rather then split up because of a bad apple or two I would rather see the community grow together and just ignore the few sour apples.

On a side note I felt nostalgic and wanted to share this with everyone. The RPC is not a alienated community, this is a vast community that through various linkshells we managed to create a story together. Im sorry if you felt alienated by someone but I wanted to show you how close many people were able to get through the RPC community. This was a video made by Kylin of many many linkshells monitored through the community since the launch of FFXIV. Enjoy! it practically brings tears to my eyes! so many old memories~<3

Fill me in, I have never really understood the RP crowd... so I would like a little clearing of the mud as they say... What I understand about RP in a RPG is... people want to role play, while role playing?! This whole thing eludes me, aren't you already role playing in the first place?! I get it people RP in reality, that's fine... but in game's which are role playing to pole play... sounds like saying I want a drink of water, while am drowning in the ocean...

People role playing as an adventurer in a game, while said character is role playing as an interstellar fairy princes!?

Oh gawd! where to begin.. Well role playing in a mmo is basically always (when in character) looking through the eyes of your character, just as you do in cutscenes and quests you're "Your" character while being "In character"(meaning you don't always have to be "in character" but choose when to(usually done by turning afk on to represent your out of character at the moment).
    Confusing?
    not really..
picture another FF title in this case let's say lightning. Shes serious, shes deadly and I doubt she would gonna randomly decide to dress up like the chocobo lady and start a hour comedy on the side of the road somewhere. Your character (in character) should have a background you've created and if it's a seriously quiet person, you want to "show" that. perhaps you don't speak a lot, "/em crosses his arms and stares at Katrina" or perhaps you respond in "..." more likely then actual text. Playing shy is usually a nice way for a newer roleplayer to grasp the strings.

Now if your going to role play as an interstellar fairy princes expect people to treat you as they would in real life if you ran up to someone in a tutu and proclaimed yourself a interstellar princess. Dependant on the in character characters attitude and that of the person playing it they will all act differently. One would call you names perhaps, one would ignore and blist you, one would laugh, and the three to the corner will walk away quietly as to not disturb the crazy person.

Q:What I understand about RP in a RPG is... people want to role play, while role playing?! This whole thing eludes me, aren't you already role playing in the first place?!

Running around uldah in your underwear yelling at people, trolling, lol'ing, and talking about obama isn't really roleplaying while roleplaying unless your female character is secretly a real man in real life trying to scam some other guy out of gil for some sexting. What roleplay is is not talking out of character, speaking as your character would and as if the game world was "the world". You don't walk up to people in public naked pulling out a nerf gun over and over proclaiming "I R LulZ"

There's as many personalities to roleplaying as their is in real life, but if you want to be crazy, spell stupid and make a outrageous story don't expect a lot of love from other roleplayers who want to take things more seriously. On the other hand some people won't care. So really it's a matter as it is when you don't roleplay, of surrounding yourself with friends, not people you don't want to play with.

Consider it another way to play a game or a little extra spice for those who like story in their games <3

Well, as a video game genre, RPGs got their namesake from the tabletop roleplaying games that they based their play mechanics off of, but considering the limitations of the hardware, doing any actual roleplaying as an in game mechanic is nigh impossible, as actual roleplaying requires that there be another human that can react dynamically to what your character is doing in order to put together an interactive narrative.

Roleplaying within an MMORPG simply puts the roleplaying back into the game by having your character interact in the world as if they were really there, and not like there's someone at a computer controlling them.

Instead of your Hyuran Dragoon just being a Hyruan Dragoon, he might be a grizzled curmudgeon who is the descendant of a long line of spear-wielders who hangs out at the inn for a drink every evening, and when interacting in-character with other roleplayers, he will react accordingly.

This isn't to say that roleplayers are in-character all the time, as we like to do quests, level, and do endgame, but when we're not doing that we often get together and play out our character's lives with each other.
