Maybe there should be a /rp, /roleplay command that works just like /say but has a different text color. That way people could distinguish in-character from out-of-character speech, and the few players who really hate rp could just shut off that channel in their logs.

Ah, but will facing north-by-northeast at 2:45 a.m. while the moon is a waning crescent result in a 27% increase in your chances to synthesize HQ mythril ingots!? That is real the question! ~Fernehalwes~

What he's proposing is different from emotes.

An emote allows a character to "act."

What he wants is a roleplay oriented feature that allows a character to "speak" in a small radius around you, because currently if you use /say for roleplaying your chances of getting griefed shoot up.

This idea doesn't sound half-bad actually.

Now, just because I feel like typing something up right now... I'd like to explain why having multiple websites with the same purpose is a healthy thing from the point of view of a non-RPer who has no connection to whatever drama happened (is happening?) in this particular community.

To understand why multiple gathering points for a community is healthy we first need to examine why they appear in the first place. The reason, quite simply, is because some section of the community is dissatisfied with the current site for whatever reasons (examples: a lack of features, site layout, the rules or lack of rules, the moderators and site leaders, the alienation of a subsection of the community, ect.). Due to human nature you simply cannot satisfy everyone and someone is going to split off and form another site designed to fill whatever hole was left by the original site. Perhaps their rules are more lax, or they have some fancy calender, maybe they ban brony's on sight or something; regardless of the reason like minded individuals from the original site will transfer to the new one, people who previously had an interest in the community will join because they feel more comfortable with the new site, and those who don't care about what form the site takes will use both sites to maximize their ability to use whatever resource the sites offer (information, connections, events, etc.). You can try to argue that the creation of a second site creates or widens a rift in the community, but the reason the second site was even created was because a rift was already gaping open isn't it? One part of the community was dissatisfied with something and the other side would have been dissatisfied if it changed, forming a rift. The longer you keep the two groups together the wider the rift gets, and eventually you have the two extremist sides spitting vitriol while trying to strangle each other. If a second site is formed it splits the two and both sides are able to operate happily rather than having side A making faces while side B screams at them and the poor neutral fellow who's friends with them both hopelessly tries to find a way to reconcile the differences of incompatible people. By splitting the community you can reduce the conflict, and expand or diversify the resources available to the community. The only issues with multiple sites arises when one site tries to force neutrals to chose a side (a "It's either we or they" sorta deal) or when the site leaders act like petty children and try to knock over each others sandcastles. When shizzles like that start happenin you know bad times are a-comin, but from the sound of the original post and some of the other it doesn't seem like that's going to occur.

    tl;dr
you need to read more, it's good for your brain.

If you want to make a counter argument or criticize my argument feel free to do so, I could use some practice anyhoodle.
