    Hello

I up this thread a bit sorry
I don't think it deserve another topic so I put it here

I am really thinking, with the Legacy and possibility to create multiple character, to create a character for roleplay only.
so wondering if other people do the same and how it is actually working.
I did not join the role play server before so everybody is being him/her-self

any people have role playing blog or videos to see how you interact with each other?
on the "role playing server" is everybody actually role playing or is it mixed?

In any case I think RR and multiple character open many opportunities for role playing and I hope we can all meet somewhere to have fun ^^

Dunno about anyone who does blogs or videos but there was a podcast (Remotely Plausible) that covered roleplaying. You might be able to find it on I-tunes still.

As for Besaid (Well, Balmung now) being the unofficial roleplaying server it was pretty mixed, with roleplayers still being a minority. You wouldn't see everyone and their mother running about roleplaying but you were almost guaranteed to bump into them from time to time.

No blog or videos that I know of, but I could give a quick explanation here. Keep in mind this doesn't necessarily apply to ARR, but is just an explanation of how it worked in 1.0.

When roleplaying in FFXIV, you use your avatar to represent their physical space in the world, meaning that if you're standing close to someone while RPing, you are standing close to them "in character" (or IC) unless you specifically state otherwise "out of character" (or OOC).

When you want your character to speak, generally people use the /say (or /s) function, which will then show up in the chat log. So if you were to type "/say Greetings there, stranger!" into the chat log it'll show up as

    Keisuna Hidae: Greetings there, stranger!

Now, we all know that RP is more than just standing around and talking to each other, so for more complex actions we can use the /emote (or /em) function to express things like facial expressions and gestures. So typing "/em looks to the newcomer and smiles in greeting, gesturing to a seat with her hand." it'll show up as

Keisuna Hidae looks to the newcomer and smiles in greeting, gesturing to a seat with her hand.

You can also combine emotes and speech by combining them in the /em function. For example: /em looks to the newcomer and smiles in greeting, gesturing to a seat with her hand. "Greetings there, stranger!" would show up as

Keisuna Hidae looks to the newcomer and smiles in greeting, gesturing to a seat with her hand. "Greetings there, stranger!"

You can also make out of character (OOC) comments by putting them in double parenthesis. This lets the other player know that your character isn't actually saying this, but you as a player in real life are saying it.

Keisuna Hidae looks to the newcomer and smiles in greeting, gesturing to a seat with her hand. "Greetings there, stranger!" ((One sec, my cat is trying to chew on my computer cords.))

Even on an unnofficial (or even official) roleplay server, not everyone is RPing all the time. If you're just playing around and relaxing, or even just grinding your levels, you don't have to roleplay while doing it. When you're doing those things, people tend to assume that you're OOC, and if they want to roleplay with you, they'll likely just ask.

A lot of people tend to roleplay within their group of friends, though, as far as I've seen, but most of them are still active in OOC venues like the Hydaelyn Role Players (or the RPC) forums and Lior's Roleplay Reborn forums. There's even an OOC linkshell where people chat and hang out that will definitely be there in ARR.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask around.

You should probably warn him about the dangers of RPing in public areas (mostly that if you are in a highly crowded area RPing in /S isn't particularly recommended.) It can lead to people immediately trolling you, or insulting you, and even asking you to leave.
If you are in a highly populated area I'd recommend doing /P as it will allow your group to speak more privately and you wont end up on quite as many block lists.

Wow, never experienced behaviour like this when RPing in /say in Ul'dah. At worst, I was ignored. No, wait, I was always ignored. Anyway, past that, no-one on was ever rude to me.

You... weren't on Balmung... I sometimes did my crafting in the quicksand and people would start RPing... this would promptly be followed by people chiming in with /em looks at (rpers) chest and smiles (Others would add slightly more vulgar statements like peeing in their tea and what not...
people yelling at them to quit spamming up chat
and often times I've seen people who won't party with people because they have an RP LS up specifically those known for RPing in /s because they apparently don't want to get spammed with RPing
I personally don't care... when the people doing it didn't suck it was quite interesting to watch.

Actually this is something we're hoping to get away from, these days you don't see as much RP because people are doing so in party or in private functions. It used to be you would walk down a street and pass two people having a regular RP gathering and could easily join in. These days, you don't. Yoshi-P mentioned about wanting to add in an RP server at ARR launch so if this happens then you'll undoubtedly see plenty of open-world RP. And honestly, if at this point someone complains about it, why are they even on that server then? Non-RPers will usually join a RP server just because of a friendlier community but I've yet to really see someone gripe and complain about it.

Actually... I've seen it on another game I'm currently playing but compared to here their RP community seems mostly non-existent so non-RPers have essentially taken over forcing people to exclude themselves to specific "groups". If that happens in ARR then the whole idea of a RP server is pointless.

That is true, if there is a dedicated RP server then yes /S would be awesome for it.
I'm just saying that there is animosity between the groups on balmung
Non-RPers don't like seeing the blocks of text and in a few cases being told they can't have a conversation because the people there are RPing in character
RPers dislike the animosity and being forced into /p

Yeah, griefers are a problem, which is why I'm hoping for an official RP server.
