We're supposed to be at war with the beast tribes, and Bangaas look a lot like beastmen.
That's why I think that until that lore is resolved, we should only get humanoid races.
Goblins in XI (also a beastman tribe) would kill you as quick as look at you. Yet there were many who were friendly, ran shops, etc.

In XII, Bangaa were mostly friendly but there were some villainous ones as well.

As long as the game immediately establishes them as "not an enemy race" - as in making them a playable option and having them scattered about in towns, cities, etc as friendly NPCs, any confusion would be immediately wiped away.

And, let's just say they go the Viera route.. Who's to say they couldn't be introduced as a rather vicious enemy race? What a race looks like, and what role they play in a given game's setting is not etched in stone. Something can be "cute but deadly" just as much as it can be "homely but friendly". Just look at the Roegadynn... (I kid.. I kid... >.>)

I think folks might be overstating the "beastly looking race = enemy" thing a bit.

As was suggested by Mudd in the other thread, it could be introduced as an entirely new race who dwells far in the S. and is granted "contact" with us thanks to Bahamut's rampage.

It would be in a future expansion, so there's plenty of time for the lore to be worked out as well.
