I do hope this is merely an example to illustrate how much the M-sized house costs. I hope "three" is not some magic house-owning number. I only want one roommate! Besides, there will be free company housing for groups/parties, no?

M-sized = Mansion, which was shown at the live letter. It's specifically for Free companies to organize and share with it's membership. Personal housing is coming later.

Ah, thanks for the explanation! The cost didn't sound prohibitive even when I thought it was for a personal house. Now that I know it is for a Mansion sized free company house, actually sounds very affordable.

(Thought that "M" meant "medium" haha; wondered... what about "S" = small?) :P

this, it has been looking like all the mmo's i've played since i quit ffxi have launched badly cause of this notion that they are trying to rush the product out and they think ohh they can fix as they go, they can give us less and just add more in patches to save money. horrible way to do mmo's and it's been obvious that it's not working cause every mmo is going f2p and failings.

I got it from the last live letter. I believe recalling how Wada pulled up some concept art and Yoshi-P started talking about it. Referring to it as "Mansion" and talking about it being for free companies at launch and how multiple players will need to pool their money together to afford it.
