Unfortunately I think the animation (or lack thereof) is a byproduct of the new control scheme designed primarily for use with keyboard/mouse. You will have to option to rotate the camera using the right mouse button, or rotate the character using the left mouse button. Left is mostly used for directing you character while running but if you turn him while standing still he simply rotates around a single axis. I don't know if they CAN change this at the current stage. But I can certainly hope....
