Well I meant aetherytes could be downplayed in terms of teleportation devices. I wasn't suggesting eliminating them. Obviously eliminating them wouldn't make sense with the aether-heavy lore.
Anyway, let me explain the archeage system. You have "memorised locations" which you can open up a portal to. The portal exists in the game world for a few seconds, and in order to travel through it, you jump through it. Anyone passing by can jump through it too.
So maybe, they could incorporate something like that, which would facilitate some kind of trade for teleportation to other areas, rather than just having anima as a currency.
I guess it might end up just being a hassle more than anything else, but I miss the days of people shouting to sell/buy teleports for some reason. I suppose in the end it is just a barrier to gameplay, rather than something that actually improves it. But still. The one good thing I suppose it would do is create a trade for teleports.

I think one detrimental thing that WHM-teleports did to FFXI was limit the size of FFXI's gameworld. It wasnt direct, but it indirectly made certain areas excluded from common travel-routes. Even though there were a lot of areas, if they weren't near a teleport location, they became unfrequented. So the same thing could happen to FFXIV as well.
To be honest, SE should just release a hardcore server with features like this for those that want it. I think there would be a sizeable demographic of people who want such things. And then everyone would live happily ever after, both people getting what they want.
I realise everything I just said was contradictory, rambly, but I guess there are compelling arguments for both sides.
