"I want to be able to do what I want and there's nothing you can do about it. Deal with it." No, I don't think so. You get the option for vanity. We should get the option to turn it off. It's a role-playing game. Looking the way you want is a really great part of developing your unique character, so I for one am looking forward to vanity slots.
I'm also 100% against any sort of toggle for people to be able to choose "not" to see vanity slots. I'm not just wanting to look the part of my character for my own benefit.. I fully intend for everyone else to see my look as well. I think having a toggle is somewhat stupid.
If some people "abuse" the system by running around in Christmas attire, so what? Roll your eyes and move on.
"Urgh, this person in MNK AF is a big yellow eyesore!...There, now he's all mismatched gear with green claws, because that's PROPER in my Eorzea."
"What is this!? Coatee costume!? Well I'll just toggle the vanity off and, A REINDEER COSTUME!? Surely we have subversives in our community that must be rooted out! Dispatch the local constable....What do you mean he's a White Mage! He should be in proper policeman attire! Scimitar, blindfolds, the lot!!"
Do you honestly think I care what a person wears outside of battle? Do you think I don't wear ridiculous things outside of combat? I don't care about vanity slots out of combat in town, that's called having a town set and you can do that now. You completely missed your point with whatever it is you're trying to accomplish."Urgh, this person in MNK AF is a big yellow eyesore!...There, now he's all mismatched gear with green claws, because that's PROPER in my Eorzea."

So you want a toggle to your toggle to affect vanity slots in or out of combat? Or should people magically transform into their combat gear at the drawing of their swords. Come on...unless their going to add a "HENSHIN!" sound, that's a little much...Do you honestly think I care what a person wears outside of battle? I wasn't asking what people actually wanted, I was asking if it was within the technical capabilities of the game. I apologize if I misinterpreted your statement though.
It is client side. The only thing server side is stats being sent to and from the server which vanity gear is simply taking the texture of another armor and slapping it ontop of something, something that's easily toggable.
The best way to explain this is if you turn your head or weapon display off other people will see you have it on or off, so it's well within possibilities of being a vanity on/off switch for your client since all it would have to do is check if they're using vanity and force the display of their real armor basically. It won't hurt game performance anymore than it does now to tell your client someone has their weapon mask on or off.
It prevents you from seeing it if you don't want to, that's the purpose.

This is exactly it. While I don't think it's good for their image (vanity system).
A toggle button would be good enough.
It has NO effect on your experience if I toggle it on or not.
Why force your experience onto me when all I really ask is for me to maintain the original SE image that Yoshida wanted and you can live in your own world knowing no difference.
