the one thing i'd advise is since it's free before it goes down and will be free when it first comes back up is to just sign in real fast and make the choice to be safe. i understand not wanting to play while working on his schooling, but signing in while free to make the server change would be the safest imo.

I agree with you, thanks for the advice, I think it's the best and safest way to insure he doesn't lose anything.
But the thing is.. he went abroad to study there, which means he doesn't have his desktop to log in upon launch. And his account is security-token protected so I can't log in for him either (and he doesn't have his security token with him).

And i think this applies to anyone who decides (or already decided) to just stop playing FFXIV for a while and come back later when it's completely different. I know many people who said they won't join ARR right away, they want to give it at least 2 or 3 months, or even more. And they will keep supporting the game.

If you have your friend call Square, they can remove the security token from his account which will allow you to log into it for him. I had to do this because my token was malfunctioning and not letting me access my account at all.
