The new GP system will help to stagger them though.
Also, we saw this in the live producer video - crystal shards are listed alongside the regular items. Kind of lame that we won't get them as an added bonus when gathering crafting materials, but I'm hoping they will increase the # of shards you get to compensate.
Hopefully we'll be able to gather crystals & clusters as well.
Well GP is for Abilities, No Per chop, you can get the same things without the Abilities just will be difficult without the abilities XD.The new GP system will help to stagger them though.

YoshiP said that GP will let you use your abilities which will change rates and possibility of items available/visible when gathering.
Now that there is no minigame to fail on they made some more RNG to deal with XD.
Basically an elm log would be 50% gather but perhaps with a ability on it's 100%, but it costs GP to cast which regenerates over a -long- period of time. (The new fatigue system basically).
Elm log is an example made by me... no idea what the rates are for items.

Still validates my point lol, which is the new system will stagger botters. And so far, it looks to be loads better than the current system, I can not express how happy I am to see the stupid Hot & Cold mini-game get the boot in favor of directly picking what we want to gather. Why I'm purposely leaving my cooking at 30; though I could level it fast & cheap on fish, eh, I hate fishing and would rather do other things. I just want to gouge my eyes out after trying to log for apples in emerald moss (I mean really, IT'S GOD DAMNED APPLES!!!! WHY ARE THEY SO RARE?!) so hopefully in ARR getting said apples won't make me want to do something unsavory, lol.
They are putting % chance on the gathered items so I'm not sure if that made anything easier. Also YoshiP hasnt described how fishing will work, it may have its own system entirely.Still validates my point lol, which is the new system will stagger botters. And what Elexia said about bots is so true, whatever system they pick its not going to stagger bots (in attempts, they can add fatigue systems - but that effects players as well). Thats why I said its a waste to design a system around fighting bots - rather make it fun.

Lol the way the current system exists it's impossible to make a "Gather bot" and I'm sure it will be in 2.0 as well. The only way to move from node to node and avoid agro while doing it is to be a human.
