This wasn't just announced yesterday, it was announced when 2.0 was FIRST ANNOUNCED. Those people wouldn't be happy to have you asking them to "divert resources" from it. Also, the FFXIV team is huge. Different people are working on different things. They clearly have plenty of resources to go around if they rebuilt both client and server from ground up while also simultaneously updating the old version and did it all in less than a year.
