I really, really, really hope that by "PC" they meant "connection". Because the reason current patcher underperforms is flooding the upload of asymmetrical connections (ADSL), thus making sending ACK packets for the download slow to impossible. It's certainly not the fault of my CPU/GPU.

IMHO, they should make a patcher which uses HTTP as it's primary source and use P2P as an additional source, giving you an option to continue seeding (otherwise you might as well kill the P2P part). For example, people living in dormitories can't use torrent because it's blocked by the university. Then there are ISPs that are explicitly looking for P2P packets and slowing them down to 1kb/s (so called traffic shaping).

Though if thats true, that would mean everyone would have issues when as we see on update day, that isn't the case. Just like using the regular internet, your specs still come into play for some aspects of it. If you have a shitty wireless adapter or ethernet card obviously you won't get the full benefit of it, for example if you have a wireless N network but rocking a wireless b/g card....yeah, that all falls into your PC specs.

It's just these days most people ignore the "network: minimum/recommended" part of PC game specs because it's not 1996 anymore and most people are generally up to date in that regard.

I have reinstalled FFXIV several times due to my SSDs was faulty from factory. And the while big patch took me about 2-3 hours, and all the smaller patcher has taken me from 5mins - 30min.

Ofc if the new one works better, than thumbs up from me
There's a difference between "Patch day" and "Patching the Whole game at random"

*If your patching the whole game during patch day time frame, then you may suffer download speeds* (Patcher Congestion)

*If you are patching the whole game that's not on patch day, then you can download the whole game with out worrying about a loss of Download speed*

Internet Speed & Computer speed are entirely different. Since were dealing with an online game, then the internet speed is what they are referring to, not Computer speed.

    Example:

    - AMD X4 Phenom 3.20 GHz
    - 12GB of RAM
    - 6770 HD Raedon

    Internet Connection: ADSL

    Compared with (Random specs):

    - AMD X2 Athlon 2.6GHz
    - 6 GB RAM
    - 5770 HD Raedon

    Internet Connection: Cable

    ------------------------------------

The top specs ( my computer) can get to a "Non-internet related" Program as quick as I click on it, However the internet connection ( which is ADSL) Which is lacking speed for the internet, thus the speed to which I get to a internet site would take me 3-4 secs rather than in a blink of an eye.

The second specs (Random) May take 3-4 secs to load up said programs ( Non-internet related), however the internet connection speed to get to internet sites (Cable), you can get to in a blink of an eye.

Now granted there is a small connection between internet and Computer, because they both have to send out signals to one another to communicate, that only matters if you really have a crappy computer. In this day in age, most people should have a fairly decent computer ( a good 300-400 computer).
    -----------------------

TL;DR= Internet speed is not the same as PC speed, FFXIV is an online game so were only dealing with Internet speed.

That's what I learned from secondary school in terms of the difference between internet speed and PC speed.

Your example is not really good... ADSL (2+) or other technolgies can give you speeds of 25 mbits, which wouldn't be slower than cable.

Just examples "one being rather high and one being rather low" and how they relate to PC speed Vs Internet speed, I don't do in between for anything, because Medium is average. I like doing the high vs low.

If the 2.0 updater will use P2P systems like bittorrent, is it possible to have users be able to set upload speeds?
Not everyone has access to a router with a good QoS system or necessarily able to set one up even if they do. (<3 Toastman's Tomato firmware on RT-N16)

DSL connections with maxed out uploads will cause significantly slower download speeds.
Cable users with maxed out uploads (we don't get much upload from cable infrastructure limitations) can't do much of anything else during the update.

Since they're changing server structure, program structure, and the game engine I don't see why they would keep the old patcher.

Many people in Europe still have outdated connections, e.g. ADSL, while other regions seem to be further ahead, having cable or fiber. Especially in Japan, asymmetric connections are uncommon. If you have cable or other symmetric connection, you won't have your upload slowing down your download anymore. The devs clearly didn't take asymmetric connections into account, else they'd give us an option to adjust our upload speed. Even if they were paranoid about people setting it to 0, there are still ways to limit your uploading sped automatically, by doing a speed test on startup and setting the upload to .8 of it.

As for having a b/g card, it's still 54mbps. My internet connection is only 3.4mbps, yet I can torrent just fine. The only reason I updated to a N card was to be able to pull stuff from my NAS faster.

@Starlord: That's what I said too. Why did you quote me? And yes, the rep post says "PC", not "connection".

Because, that was the topic I was talking about and just wanted to tell everyone who didn't know about it.
