You people are taking the wrong digit off. You take the rightmost digit not the left. You do this universally across all players, items, quests, etc and round up the right most digit, the change is negligible.

I.E. 7,399,321 gil becomes 739,932 gil. 111,297 gil becomes 11,129 gil; etc.

Of course why are they letting us keep any of this gil to begin with?

I'm pretty sure a lot of people wouldn't have wasted as much time playing if they knew their gil would just be erased. We should get to keep all of it as a reward for sticking with the game.
