It could be that we're simply taking the crystals back after Atomos creates them from stolen Aether. That doesn't explain why those camps are free, though.

I think they're free because they have SO much aether at them (the aetherytes are clearly 'over-aspected') that we can be drawn there so easily that it costs none of our own aether.

I would agree with this one, if you look at the overaspected crystal icon its an orange colour so it would be logical that the aetherites have become overaspected.

That actually would tie in to them breaking free of the ground and needing to be chained down even more. Lots of fun speculation going on, though. Can't wait to see the changes... (though I secretly think they made them free to travel to accommodate everyone who ported to a camp and died not knowing atomos was there.)

Only his FFXI incarnation gave us the ability to traverse time so I don't think it will be Atomos that sends us into the future.

True, but FFXIV is still similar to XI is a lot of ways, and considering Atomos WAS used for that once, and even now is clearly a link to another dimension, that it may be the case in XIV as well.

I just think it would be wiser for SE to just keep Atomos gravity based rather than basing his whole story on time travel, another dimension however can be different, something that hasn't been done with him before, but does tie in with his traditional gravity base, in that people used to think black holes were gateways to another dimension.

Right... And if we get sucked into another dimension that happens to be 'beyond time' and then spewed out again after what amounts to 5 years Hydealyn time, then it effectively works like time travel...just forward-only.

Time travel and gravity are tied you know... it it were possible.

I think atomos will relate somehow tot he final battle and it will be a way for the planet to defend himself against dalamud.

I do know that time and gravity are related, I do know the higher the gravity the faster time travels, and it would be possible to travel to the future by orbiting a black hole due to the immense gravitational pull, I am a great fan of Dr Hawking's work.
