It's hard to say, but speculating, I'd like to assume its something you can farm out in the world, and with it(materia), you can apply it to your crafts to give special bonuses to w.e your crafting. Example is, lets say your crafting some arrows. By applying a fire materia to the materials, instead of just crafting regular arrows, it would make fire enhanced arrows.

That would be an interesting way for players to add there own touch to there crafts. lol
