You are quite correct. "Gear Score" sounds like they're assigning a flat, single number to an entire gear set. Such a feature lacks nuance and therefore utility. But I hope it is a bit more detailed.
I remember that Yoshi said that you can't use Content finder for content you haven't reached yet, so they will have to have at least gone to the dungeon once before they use Content finder and gear score. But beyond DPS, rank and Damage, what could Gear Score calculate? Wouldn't the other stats and their utility be based primarily on what the rest of the gear is for and what the content is and how the party is set up?
For example: WHMs can have their gear set to Cure-bombing, Buffing, or Nuking. But if gear score only takes into account Healing Magic Potency and Attack Magic Potency of the gear set (or, gods forbid, the DPS/Damage/Delay stats of the weapons....), it's not going to be useful for content similar to Ifrit (Extreme) where the party is scattered across the field and needs a strong regen to survive.
Gear Score might be good for "introductory to gear" purposes... but, in the end, a serious player will still need to know stat caps and know the content to play effectively. And all the players will have to know how to do their job and work together in the party....
I just don't know how a "Gear Score" could do all this.... Maybe YoshiP can tell us. Has someone posted a question about this yet?
I actually just posted a question on the "Letter from the Producer, Live" question thread. Hope it gets picked.
edit: here's the link, if anybody wants to "Like" it, that thread is kind of a cluster-F right now...

The best part about arguments like this? Yoshida already said in ARR the current strategies and balance isn't the same as it will be in ARR.I think it's actually a good thing. For certain events (*coughGARUDAcough*), you NEED your gear to match up to certain minimum stats or you won't be able to put out the dps necessary to survive. Other events like Ifrit (Hard)... well let's just say there are all-swimsuit class runs of that guy. I'm not seeing any naked swimsuits runs on Garuda!
I also found it funny how someone said "Level capping will split/segregate/fracture the community", gearscore will do it, not level capping.
Honestly shouldnt be to hard, tbh, each job has two primary stats, then you could factor in additional stats based on job:
Let's do BLM and PLD
BLM:
INT: 25/25 possible points
PIE: 25/25 possible points
MND: 15/15 possible points
HP: 10/10, MP:10/10
Macc: 25/25, Matk:25/25
BLM specific checks: -Emnity:10/10, elemental potency: 10/10, Mcrit rate:10/10, Mcrit Bonus dmg:10/10
175 total points possible. As the game stands you could put Garuda at 150 or 160.
You could be low on int, and Macc but make up the points in other area's. /shrug.
That same scale could be used for moogle fight but Lower the number to around 120-130.
Say a stat score of 400 int, would net you 25 out of 25. -40 Emnity could hit 10/10 in that category.
PLD:
STR: 25/25
MND:25/25
VIT: 15/15
DEX: 5/5
Acc: 20/20, atk: 15/15
HP: 15/15, MP:10/10
PLD Specifics: +Emnity 25/25, block rate: 10/10, defense: 10/10,
Again 175 cap, something's carry more weight than other things 160 for a safe Garuda run, gear wise.
330 STR cap, 330 MND cap : would get you 50/50 points,
Again you get the idea, being able to run pickup garudas would be great but by this little scale I just came up with off the top of the head, 90% of Balmung is sitting below 110 gear score.
Actually, a PLD friend of mine, one of the best in my LS, was declined a JP Skirmish party on the fact that he was wearing more than 1 piece of AF gear and that would put the whole party "in danger." So yes, current players in FFXIV DO judge your gear. With this thing, they just won't invite you, instead of inviting, checking, then kicking.
Healer strike is ridiculously foolish and accomplishes nothing
Im kind of on the fence about this one. Gear score is just another metric and on paper can be a very handy guideline for players. How ever more often then not I have seen this particular tool misused to bludgeon other players.
Like Bharata was saying. We really need info on the mechanics of the system its self before we can pass any kind of informed judgment on it. If it's just a flat score assigned to gear regardless of its actual impact on your characters performance then I vote this goes out the air lock.

I have been in PUG parties where there was one or more level 50 in level 25-35 NM drop gear.
Who are they kidding?
rofl.
This will help those who use content finder to filter out dead weight like I mentioned above.
I like frog
Yeah true, if it just stacks the "rarity" of your pieces than it might as well not exist. I'd like to see it reflect how good the stats that matter for your job are and stuff like that.
