I think gear score could help even if your not an elitist, at least it shows you what your gear comes out to and lets you know if you need more improvement by getting a gear upgrade or not to catch up.

Gear score has always been a really shitty idea, and it's a shame Square rolled with it because other big name MMO's use it
Gear score completely trivializes the whole fucking community and role playing aspect of the genre. You stop looking at people as individuals with preferences, habits, personality, and skill level, and instead zero in on the fucking label
What does having a gear score have to do with role playing? No matter how good you are, not having adequate gear will cause you to be a hindrance on the group. Example being Garuda, where you can know exactly what to do and do it, but if you have less than appropriate gear, you won't be able to beat her in time. It has nothing to do with skill, and more to do with "do you meet the minimum stat requirements to even be able to clear the content?"Gear score has always been a really shitty idea, and it's a shame Square rolled with it because other big name MMO's use it

This basically. You'll just become numbers.Gear score has always been a really shitty idea, and it's a shame Square rolled with it because other big name MMO's use it

The "community" is still trivialized regardless of whether gearscore is there or not. As is RP.
Stuff like appearance tabs/vanity slots/transmogrification support RP. Hell, it also supports player individuality because we're choosing our own look.
Preferences only work when everyone performs at the same level, which some here seem to be adverse to. Yes, to get people to respect your playing a MNK, you and BLM and RNG and DRG and all the damage dealers have to be for the most part interchangable. Same thing with tanks, and same thing with healers.
So if you want player individuality and RP, do all of us a favor and support transmog/vanity slots/appearance tabs. If you want preferences and personality of the player to be respected, then ask the devs to ensure that the jobs all perform comparably to each other and ensure raid design doesn't favor melee or range for every fight. Don't blame that on gear score, because it has NOTHING to do with those issues.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

As long as its just there to help people not lock people out of content I'm fine with it. Its when people start saying you have to have xxx gear to do content or join a LS, the latter is worse because it will ensure new players can't get the gear score needed to join a LS.
Yes, I would hate to see people do that.As long as its just there to help people not lock people out of content I'm fine with it. Sarcasm detected. ^^
Gear has mattered and will always mattered to some LS's, some pickup parties, and some people. However, it won't change the opinion of others who don't care as much (particularly on easy pick up content like skirmish) I doubt gear score will make a significant impact on the community. With content finder, it's going to be easier to get parties with people to help you improve your gear, if you personally feel the need.
