ingame harassment thats not being done anything about?
I used to be Noomy...then i took shiva's Hail Storm to my knee...
Let me conjure some examples
Player A: "OMG, those peoples are annoying! How dare they use the same name like me, Lina. I'm not hip anymore!"
Player B: "OMG, that male miqote looks cute. ME WANNA!!!'"
Player C: "Crap. This is bad. I accidentally kill my friend. I need to lay down. Oh, what to do, what to do. I know! I'll change my appearance and name. Now no one will catch me!"
All: "But I don't want to replay it all again!!!"
Yea, I guess thats called selfish
ps: I'm not against change. I'm against ridicoulous idea that will/potentially bring imbalance to either game mechanics, game experience and game lore. For those who said that I'm not role play enough, actually I role play enough. And right now, I'm role play as some adventurer in medievel setting, and to no friggin way access to some gender or even race change. Sure, I could dye my hair blond or black, but that? Totally not gonna happen in medieval setting
Maybe they will open up a roleplay server with no options to change? But Ridill deserves a name change damnitaru!!
Roleplay setting: The syndicate of Ul'dah allows you a one time name change with a high price.
Retired FFXI character: Ranok of Sylph
Think there's some missing logic here.ps: I'm not against change. I'm against ridicoulous idea that will/potentially bring imbalance to either game mechanics, game experience and game lore. Human beings found out about... (how to say this in a proper manner?)
"How to re-populate themselves?" before they invented fire or the Wheel.
All pre medieval settings.
Name change isnt something brand new and been around for ages past, this include aliases etc.
Human beings change their last name in marrige too you know.
I doubt name change will bring much inbalance to game mechanics as you suggest.
Bad players, acting like morons, harassing others brings unbalance to online gaming experience.
nuff said.

The more options the better in the modern age of MMOs.
Rina your argument would be more valid if the case was you could change your name on a whim but seeing as people are asking for a one time name change the players that are mean and nasty wont be able to stay in hiding for long. So what your saying is no one can RP as someone that lost their name and memory so they adopt a new name? I guess back in the dark ages or any period of time for that matter there was absolutely no way that a traveler far from home could loose their memory and since no one knows them they take on a new name?
Let me conjure another example
You are a famous adventurer. Bards sing songs of your heroic deed. Statues are erect in Cities, Hamlets, all corner of the world to respect you. You are XXX, adventurer extraordinary!
But then you got bored with your name, which is, like I said before, what you are pre-2.0, your keepsake, your Legacy! Could you imagine that all the bards have to rename yourself in their songs, crafter scratch their head thinking so hard how to change the statues that they made into a new you (physic and identity) without have to start from scratch?
Yes, bard and crafter can be selfish
so what?
everyone is!
ps: that's just some lazy analogy for the all pain that DEV/DB team have to endure to re-name player ID into their database. Yes, I'm lazy like that
I don't even get the point you are trying to make.Let me conjure some examples

Square Enix is adding missing genders that I would have like to play as. They want us to have the opportunity to change since 2.0 is a DIFFERENT game with DIFFERENT graphics so we pretty much HAVE to remake our characters.
As far as name games, it makes sense if you are change gender. Some would just rather a name change like me because I have a name that I would have rather gone by.
It makes sense to change your name if you planned on changing your gender. I mean it won't look right if you were a female cat name Tiffany and switched over to a male cat and your name is still Tiffany. That's just weird. But IF ONLY the people who changes their characters gender are the only ones allowed to change their name, that isn't really quite fair to the other players that didn't want to change genders, now is it?
you would think they will give us a full character change when 2.0 gos live. i doubt they'll leave out the name change since we have to remake our characters because the game it self is new.
only thing were keeping is a database of what we have like items, levels, etc.
