this. because once someone discovers the "cookie cutter" build, it will be no different from what we have now.
Only instead of "oh, you dont has dubble melds? too bad" it will be "oh you dont has xx/xx/xx? tew bad"
Hrm... Aren't skill trees quest-based and called Jobs in this game?
I mean, that's what it looks like to me.
Just want to be able to customise my character further that doesnt revolve solely around gear or a linear progression such as levels.
Well, it certainly will be like that once they start releasing more than one job, which is the future plan as far as i'm aware. So you're certainly not going to see a Lancer that looks like another, one will be Dragoon, another will be Dark Knight, you might even see the guy rolling Lancer.
In the end, given multiple jobs per class, comparing two people in the same job would be like in RO comparing two katar assassins. There's a few minor differences based on tiny details but they're in the same path of the skill tree, so they're obviously looking alike.
a few concerns: SE tried this to an extent with customizing stats. it ended miserably as stats had relatively little meaning in order to prevent certain builds from being OP.
Also, didn't Rift try this? dont they have less players than we do now?
and finally, dont people just end up gravitating toward cookie cutter builds?
I just see too many possible problems with this. For example, if you have a "solo build" (DRG wyvern example), what happens when you actually want to do some group content? If your chosen build isn't that good for group play, you might be left out. And for BLM example, if you have to pick an element you spesialize in, what happens when BLMs in your LS want to specialize in the same element? They will be forced to pick something else or the LS will be unable to do certain content?
What would be the good sides of this suggestion? The feeling you are somehow special, different from others? Could there be some other way of making it possible without having to sacrifice the efficiency of yourself or the whole group?

gradual 24 hour cool down to reset everything :P
we have a job system for this reason. A skill tree is irreversible most of the time, the job system is not.
Even if they just added the FFXI merit point system but just changed appearance and made it easier to look at that would be fine in my opinion. It allowed for quite a bit of customization.
