What would happen if SE changed the "official" currency to lets say for arguments sake the "Ishgard Dollar" when 2.0 is released?
As of 2.0 release all leves, battle rewards chests etc drop ishgard dollars.
Ishgard dollars are accepted all over the realm, however gil is only used in the three starting city states market wards and in trade. Ishgard dollars are therefore more desirable due to their utility, valuable to due to its rarity. Inflation can be closely controlled.
You can still use gil to trade for goods if you wish but due to the fact it no longer drops, attrition by tax will remove alot of the supply of gil from the game. When it has reached a desirable level ,simple re-instate gil as the official currency and resume its supply by conventional means.
Cons
A dual currency system would be a headache to maintain, trying to figure out a price in dollars vs gil problematic.
Gil is not hard to obtain, even for new players. Currency change is unnecessary
Relies heavily on there being a new "hub" city in 2.0 release (Ishgard?)
Pros
New Players at 2.0 release feel like they can start on a semi even playing field.
Inflation can be controlled from the start
Dollar bills stick in miqotes thongs better than gold coins.
