I mentioned in another thread how in a lot of old school FFs, when you summon a primal,avatar,eidolon,w/e the summoner disappears off screen while the summon does their big move, and in some games (like FFX) you can actually control the summon like it was a party member, and tell it what skills to use etc.
I was thinking it would be cool for summoners in FFXIV if when the summoner summons something, your character disappears off the screen, and the summon appears instead, and you get a new set of skills on the action bar for controlling the summon.
Taking this concept one step further, since we can't summon the primals in the traditional sense, why not let us summon their "essence". Have it so that defeating a primal allows you to absorb some of their power which you can then "summon" to yourself whenver you please. Doing this would alter your character's appearance to make you look a little bit like the primals and you would gain their abilities.
So you would have things like "Ifrit form", "shiva form", "titan form" etc. and your actions would be different depending on which form you're in.
It's a pretty big departure from the mainstream ideology of what a summoner typically is, but I think it would be a pretty nice adaptation for an MMO.
And since I'm throwing ideas out there, I was thinking as a substitute for perpetuation cost, take away shards instead of mp. Every time you use a skill in primal form, take away one shard. It would make sense lore-wise, because the primals derive their power from the crystals. It would increase demand for shards, effectively turning them into a form of arrows.
