Kudos to Xenophage Kaiser of Mysidia for this info:

If you guys are worried about your GPUs and you have an Nvidia card, you should check Nvidia's site for the new drivers released not too long ago, I'm currently downloading one for my GTX 260M, and it's specs listed it as improving Final Fantasy XI performance, (I'm guessing it was a typo since xi has been out forever) I also understand that they can improve framerate, while reducing core heat.

GF460 always has heating issue; is noted; the 500 series fix that.

I don't think it is, as the last several nVidia drivers have had odd issues with FFXI.

Your system has major cooling issues if you need to run an air conditioner for the sake of keeping the PC cool at any time, much less 24/7. Something tells me your PC is running hotter than it should even when you're not playing games.

Heh Nvidia has always had issues with XI.

I didn't know the PC version had the Auras for Summons until I upgraded to an AMD/ATI card because the Nvidia cards refused to render the glowy effect. It didn't render it on GM's either.

I thought it was just a discrepancy between the PS2 and PC versions at the time. Then changing the card. "Bang" magically delicious and I see all the effects in full detail.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

Uh by air cooled he means fans, not an air conditioner. Tech thread exit is right over there -->

But once again that still does not account for a 20C temp discrepancy between Starcraft II, Civ 5, and other games which came out roughly about the same time.
In Starcraft II the map is pre-loaded and the character sprites are not nearly as large as in XIV. O_o I don't magically see sprites rendered as they enter my sight range in SC2 and that's because it's a much lesser load. Likewise the textures for the maps are not that large either.

In XIV the map must be drawn and rendered every time you move the camera, every time you physically move and everytime something else must draw an emote/move. Every time a PC or NPC appears in your range it must be loaded, drawn and stored. So, no, this game isn't really putting an unrealistic load on your GPU compared to other games.

Judging by how little the game engine does, some high poly characters and a smack load of bloom i'd say it is overtaxing. Even WoWs engine probably has more special effects and shaders than XIV.

And WoW is offset by Low Draw Distance, Low Res Textures, etc. Bloom itself isn't that taxing. >_> It's Also not just the characters that are complex.

It may be slightly lower but i dont remember the pop-in/blurry texture distance being as bad as XI. Hell i dont think it was even noticeable in XI. One step forwards 2 steps back.

pop-in? Blurry Texture? Are you referring to when you get closer to certain landscapes?
