Let's not feign ignorance here. From people calling other players "ugly vanilla" to outright refusing to RP with them at all because they're vanilla, it absolutely was a thing.

RP never requires mods to RP. Its mostly just make believe like what kids do to have fun. The game systems in place just make it easier to visual and provide outlets for that RP when with a group of friends.
A very big part of the "declining playerbase" is just FFXIV returning to realistic pre-Shadowbringers numbers after the WoW-exodus and COVID inflation. That's the thing, though. Whether it was SE pulling the plug doesn't matter too much, but the timing couldn't be worse. We already have a declining player base due to a divisive expansion, and subsequent patches, despite getting better, have not recuperated that initial loss. Seemingly out of nowhere, this happens, and it would without a shadow of a doubt hurt the player base further, especially the RP community.
Perhaps there would be another one running in a few weeks or months. The question, however, is whether it would bring back the players that it has lost.
In general tho, the impact that losing a 3rd party too has on the community is minimal, and a new one that does the same thing as what gets shot down is generally not far behind.
Between recent events (and the discussion thereof) and prior discussions back and forth on existing gameplay issues or the debate of hard vs easy content... really seeing there's not much difference between this community and other gaming communities- just as antagonistic and factional as other communities. I don't really have a horse in this race since my interaction with either side of the community split is marginal and I largely play to do content and glam, nor am I completely innocent of the problem considering a few of my thoughts regarding the convo on hard vs easy content, but it really feels like the community is cannibalizing itself this expansion.
I am assuming that it became a prerequisite for most who wanted to RP? Judging from the thread posts I saw.Hit a critical mass. They have the don't ask don't tell rule. But players feel that their mods are too big to fail and would kill the game if it were ever touched.
Me personally i find that extremely disrespectful, imagine a community telling you that your game can't survive on its own two legs because the only reason why is does, is a unsupported mod that the players think is too popular to be touched and openly flaunt it.
It pretty much was ubiquitous. It became expected to have it.
If you don't have it , players are having a imperceptible party around you.
Players with these mods want other players to see their mods. So their less reason to engage with someone who doesnt have them because they cant show off their "true" self

"You don't have mare, so I don't RP with you"? What the fuck people?
Just make your emotes more descriptive and make actual glams that mimick the glams you have?
You probably never were good RPers to begin with.
Also yes I will totally continue to RP.

Dawntrail is what I imagine the entire MSQ as a healer-main.
Most roleplayers i spoke to felt like Mare harmed the community a lot. But I don't know if those people were the majority, or if my rper friends are all just very traditional.

well I will say this due to animation change and everything most well mare user used those instead of describing thing. so if you where vanilla you would just see a random emote. even some player used mare so bad that they made a full concert thing out of those emote so imagine it was heavily unfriendly to console player downright often insulting too
that was common yes even sometime a venue would refuse anyone to enter if they didn't have mare and some community too
