Modding didn't go away. People weren't banned for using Mare, and mods themselves are still being used across the game. What got shut down was the ability to sync those mods with friends in real time. Mare was an opt-in tool used mostly in private RP and social spaces to share visual mods and enhance immersion. It wasn't harming gameplay or violating anyone's privacy.
Meanwhile, bots continue to run for weeks, and stalker tools like PlayerScope still exist in private circles. Square Enix chose to target the least harmful part of the modding scene while ignoring the tools that actually disrupt gameplay and invade player privacy.
To make it worse, the Mare devs had banned predators and bad actors from their service. Those same people forked Mare and created LSync, also known as Lopsync or LoporritSync, which is still active. So the worst actors got to keep their tools, while the rest of them who just wanted to have fun with friends got punished.
