They did. It turns all 4 quadrants purple and all symbols in the distance purple, so that there is no safe spot, then the bird flies to the purple note and kills the party.

I did hit enrage in Stormblood sometimes, but like you said it was easy to have loads of deaths due to gear. Even minimum item level after Stormblood, you could have a lot of deaths due to how expansions changes shifted potencies and things like that. As such, having a Red Mage was a good PUG strat to carry parties through.

Unreal however gives us no such advantages. It's scaled for our job potencies right now and it's synced almost to minimum item level (scaled for 690, synced to 695).

Usually that's the case, but if there's so little leeway for mistakes, and it's a fight where PF usually makes a mistake, it forces you to figure out a way to increase the success rate of your parties. Fortunately, it's rare for that to happen in this game so jobs don't get locked out very often.
