I'm going to assume there's a good reason that they have to go down for 5 hours, I'm sure it must be something pretty serious, let's hope they fill us in.

Wow, OP. Just wow. It figures that with what appears to be a great patch all you can focus on is the maintenance window and how it screwed up your day off. I'm sure that Yoshi-P and the devs, who have been working very hard to get this patch out before Golden Week so many players wouldn't bitch and moan about a delay, will appreciate that all their hard work has been thrown out the window in your mind because of 5 hours out of your day off have been "stolen" for maintenance.
And don't try to blame the patch time on them. That's between you and your ISP baby.
This has been an issue even in FFXI servers. I played FFXI since launch, and was constantly burdened by how the time-zones worked out. Being on Eastern time, 7pm PDT to me, means 10pm+ .. So when you look at it, if I work in the morning and get out at 3pm, the game is on Maint for the whole day. If I work evenings, I come back 9-10pm, and there's still one hour left of maint. 10-11pm rolls around, do I really want to stay up and RUIN my life by playing..? Yes. Do I? No, Reason always pulls true. As a N/A player, the Maint. scheduling has always utterly screwed me out of gametime. And yet, I still stuck without complaining. I'm understanding that, SE is based in Japan, and obviously they would accomodate THEIR people's fanbase, not foreigners first. I think "Is this a Trend you are setting for FFXIV?" isn't really a NEW trend, it's a trend they've been following since the Olden(Not so Olden..Still up and running) FFXI days. My point being, they're going to STICK WITH this trend. They have for the past 5years+. My personal advice to you is, either find a second Game to play during the Maint days in FFXIV, change your job scheduling, or quit the Game. All of the choices I've given you are very radical, but they're the only choices who will stick true.Ok, so as most of you can tell, I don't post often in the lodestone forums. I read over much, but rarely feel the need to give my opinion as it is usually expressed by other players.
Today's Maintenance is the first time I have truly become genuinely frustrated and angry with Square-Enix.
I have been playing FFXIV since before its Launch over a year ago, and I have stuck with it because I am a true fan of SE and believe they produce quality gaming. I never once complained about the lack of game play in FFXIV, nor the constant Maintenance or "Emergency Maintenance" which happen to ALWAYS fall on my days off from work (Being an American and having to sit around waiting for servers to come up so the JP and AUS player's don't have their prime time messed with).
We are Paying Customers and I am now at a point that I do not feel I am getting my Money's worth. Today, I waited for 5 hours to play the game I pay a monthly subscription to, just to get on and have to wait another 5 hours? Thanks SE, there goes my entire Day Off.
What I would like to know is, "Is this a Trend you are setting for FFXIV?" If "Emergency Maintenance" is going to be a regular occurrence (as it as been for the past year), how can we, as players, schedule our free time to enjoy the game we are paying for? Are we just paying you so we can be constantly inconvenienced?
Sincerely Your Faithful But Disgruntled Subscriber,
Kallaks/Cunnucs Nightsbane
Personally, I quit FFXI to play WoW, then I rejoined FFXI because I had "Good memories," ofcourse Abyssea ruined such memories and reminded me why I quit for WoW. I still play WoW today, and I'm a casual raider who raids 2 days a week. So when FFXIV maint is up? Like today (I worked 12pm~>10pm btw), I got home, I drank and ate, then I hopped on WoW (While downloading FFXIV patch) and raided. Once I was done, I logged out and tried playing FFXIV only to find that an Emergency Maint had been called. It's 2am now, and I'm still up, I was very excited to play FFXIV after my download finish, but as ALWAYS Square-Enix has DISAPPOINTED me, as usual. But again, being an N/A and enjoying it's great government, I am used to such disappointments. Bottomline is: Don't make FFXIV your priority Game, you'll find that is IS A GREAT GAME, but a word of advice from me is, don't expect to be accomidated by SE very often. Explore, find new things, and remember~> FFXIV IS 1.22 NOT 2.0 EXPECT MAINT. AND EMERGENCY MAINT. TO PATCHES TO OCCUR VERY VERY VERY, did I mention.. MANY TIMES. I feel your pain..
Sincerely Yours, Fellow Faithful But Disgruntled Subscriber,

at least were only paying 10 bucks vs a "free"to play(pay to win) where everything is $$$ per thing and it last for like a week.
whats a few hours of downtime?
We could look at it this way, it's around 2 or 3 pm in Japan right now, so there are people over there who can't play. (I'm saying this to the people who are angry about maintenance times hitting around the North American "prime time" thingy)
You have missed the point of the post. Today is just one example of many occurrences that have become a trend for FFXIV. I stated that I appreciate the work that is being done, if I didn't, I would not continue to play the game. My concern is the constant unscheduled down time with the game. Players pay the play the game and we all know maintenance is necessary. We all schedule our free time around the maintenance when it is scheduled to occur. Recently however, it is FFXIV has seen more unscheduled "Emergency Maintenance" than scheduled maintenance, effectively disrupting the playtime of players who arrange their play time accordingly.Wow, OP. As far as getting the patch out before "Golden Week," who cares? I would have gladly waited a week for a great patch with no unscheduled down time. Everyone deserves a vacation, why double the work load before you leave? If the patch was no ready for release, it should have been delayed and released at the appropriate time.
SE couldn't have predicted login troubles right after a patch. You have missed the point of the post. Today is just one example of many occurrences that have become a trend for FFXIV. SE couldn't have predicted that Uldah lag would be so bad it'd be impossible to run the inns.
SE couldn't have predicted that instanced fights would cause entire servers to crash.
SE couldn't have predicted that a small bug could have/would have/did cause severe server crashings in worlds.
SE couldn't have predicted ______. No one could have. They're responding as quickly as they possibly can. Your lost 5 hour game time (in the middle of the night, I might add) is really of no consequence.
Do something else. *plays Minecraft, humming Garuda battle theme*
