We had something similar to this as a class, but people whined that it wasn't Final Fantasy enough so they turned them into black mages

I was a bit sad when back in the days Necromancer was put aside for PUP (which ended up being nice anyway) especially since, if i remember right, there was even a "Necromancer" npc in Phoemiuna Aqueducts for the mannequin quest in XI.
In XIV it could work even better because the lore for Necromancer is already there since Ul'dah fought in the past against a city which used raised zombies as soldiers.
It may just be me but i think Necromancer could be a nice addition as a future class/job.
Take the concept of PUP and instead of the master being a MNK, it's a caster like FFV/TTa, since remember, PUP was originally going to be Necromancer (which is why it's on pretty much every mage set in the game initally) so the concept of working and handling/upgrading an automata would be the same as what a necromancer woulda been doing with it's undead pets.
Since you never played FFXI you wouldn't know this, but Necromancy alongside summoning was a pretty large part of XI's lore during the crystal war era, which is why it became a forbidden art and all Necromancers were sent into the aqueducts. So unless you're stating FFXI isn't a FF game, you are correct.
@Iisire:
There was a lot more than just 1 Necromancer NPC, the art it self was said to be put aside in favor of a lighter form of dark magic, which became the form Black Mages learn since reanimating the dead was going to be a tactic used by Tavnazian mages however the Lightbringer pretty much wrecked that plan. Also the quest where you fight the female Mannequin pretty much details why Necromancy was never fully embraced or taught because it only lead to suffering of the poor soul attached to the inanimate object/undead creature.
So I'd definitely like to see Necromancer as I was looking forward to it most at the fan fest.
They could go off of the Uldah lore which would work. But like i said before if they wanna get Lazy they can just add an NPC that asks you if you wanna learn a darker magic and just say screw the Thm lore.
No people did not whine that it wasn't final fantasy enough. We lost the class because we didn't have defined roles and in essense we had two healers, usually the THM being the preferred.
Why do people say it is "not Final Fantasy"? So when they introduced guns in the game, did all these people say the same thing? No, they picked up the peices and moved on. Necromancy has been in Final Fantasy before, why not now?
I seen this thread before and the amount of resilience to Necromancer's was pathetic.
Necromancer has always been considered an 'villain' job in FF games and thus off limits to players (FFV:Adv being the sole exception)
It could work in this game, but I wouldn't want to see it even considered until we have RDM, SMN, BST, DRK, THF, NIN, SAM, BLU, and Time Mage.
Let's get the mainstream FF Jobs in there first before we see any obscure FF jobs like necromancer, gun mage or painter.

But MAYBE I WANT TO BE A PICTOMANCER.
Seriously though, Necromancer is more of a last ditch job...there's still so many base jobs they need to reintroduce before even thinking about this job as much as I liked the backstories in XI.
Dancer is a must though.
Why do we always have to fall back on what's in EVERY other Final Fantasy game? Why not let them create new things? I mean we almost had muskateer and we don't even know what arcanist was going to do. I don't see why Necromancer couldn't fit in as being a debuffer, etc...
What MMO are we playing? You'd think they'd work with what exists now. We do know what arcanist will do, we know it's an enfeeblist that utilizes traps. "Create new things", 2010 FFXIV would like a word with you. Why do you think Yoshida is doing all to make this feel like a FF first and foremost? We are playing Final Fantasy XIV after all...or am I mistaking and we're playing a Generic Fantasy online game? Why do we always have to fall back on what's in EVERY other Final Fantasy game? Were you saying they should create new things when they announced FFXI and seen they were using the base 6 FF jobs? Somehow I doubt you made a big deal about it.
It really depends on whether the people driven nuts by the fact we have two magic classes in XIV are first on the list to be sated. I don't know about others, but Necromancer could work in favor of being another caster added to the list. As has been mentioned, there's even game lore that supports it.Necromancer has always been considered an 'villain' job in FF games and thus off limits to players (FFV:Adv being the sole exception)

* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
