Turning off SSAO did make the cheeks on my character look 2% less sunken when I'm in any lighting that isnt absolutely perfect, but 2% less terrible is still terrible. Turning it off even comes at the massive cost of making lighting on every object around you more flat and ugly.
There's no GFX option (What this thread is literally asking for) to un-plump her once sharp face, to fix the awful shadows that cast on the new mesh (Turning shadows off entirely for your character makes their mouth and eyelids glow), to remove the overbearing gloss on her lipstick-less face, to return her eye shape to the radically different one it once was, among many other graphical regressions forced on the players.
Sure, I don't doubt the graphics "update" is one from a technical standpoint, but stylistically, this is more of a regression than 1.0 -> 2.0. The style of the characters moved further towards realism where it was previously stylized, and now things like the mouth and eyes look uncanny.
ARR-EW environments were a 7/10, DT's updated environments are an 8/10.
ARR-EW character appearances were an 8/10, DT's "updated" character appearances are a 5/10.
Not worth the time or money spent.
I dont even care if this feature gets added with the caveat that I can't wear headgear or use hair made 7.0 and onwards. I couldn't care less if the devs give the "old characters" option zero support. Cyrtip got beat with the ugly stick.
