See SionDurant this is where I disagree completely.
I can safely say FFXI was my favorite out of the entire series (Sorry FF III We can still be friends though) because it was an honest to God Final Fantasy title. You just happened to be online and all your Party members were replaced with real people. A large part of how they accomplished the sense of progressive building strength was to lengthen out the leveling process. Force groups and make the content at the very least challenging out the gate. The leveling process itself should be a LARGE leg of the adventure. With Endgame being something with which you can participate if you want the rewards but you could otherwise spend that time on another job.
If capping a job in a few days is just a little hassle that needs mending before the REAL game can begin then this game never has a chance in HELL of making us give a damn about the story.
That is like stepping out of the starting city, tripping over a Nut biter, then being teleported to the surface of Dalamund as it begins to reenter the atmosphere. You are completely decked out in pulsating red and pale armor intricately designed and a Pole Arm that has the weight of a thousand gale storms behind it. You are faced with animated interface golem which controls the living kinetic weapon of extinction and you beat the foe in 3 hits. The asteroid about faces returns into a safe orbit and you are then again teleported back to your starting city with a massive CONGRATULATIONS of gilded gold text. An NPC with the likeness of Hiromichi Tanaka comes and adorns your neck with a ring of flowers and says, "GOOD JOB YOU BEAT THE GAME!"
The world has to feel dangerous. Push back and ultimately make you respect how small you are alone. Only through the combined effort of your fellow heroes can you rise to the occasion and test what horrors await you in whatever End game event you decide to run. Without that build up you may as well just have all the Jobs unlocked and capped right from the get go. To save you the time of that tedious annoying leveling flaw. With no Mid-game there IS no End game.
