I agree that there are already a wide variety. But I do want my hammer wielding geomancer tank, my gf still wants her arcane knight, I got friends still wanting their corsair that's a mostly melee physical RDM , or their viking DPS with dual axes and burst with 1.5s GCD, and so on.

I won't argue about the rest, because I don't think that's the point of this thread, but the fact the game doesn't need more classes doesn't mean we shouldn't get more classes. We should, because that's what get people going, what's exciting for them, because their characters become more akin to that they envisioned for them. I like traditional PLDs, and I like tanking, so I'm all good, but there are people that want very specific gameplays, and more classes enable the game to provide that gameplay for them. That's all there is to it.

I think in interviews they've mentioned trying to either move away from new classes or just cut back and not have as many new ones. Especially since they did mention thinking about not increasing the level after 100. They could also take a cue from D&D and do something maybe like dual-classing if they wanted to keep the level where it was but still keep adding Jobs. I can imagine after a certain point it just gets to be a lot to manage and the cons of adding new Jobs starts to outweigh the benefits.

That’s not fair to the people who want to like jobs that are already in the game but have had concerns about the gameplay for years that never gets addressed because the devs need to devote time to creating the next two shiny things for players and balance them against the others.

The jobs released to the game since Stormblood have been mostly alright. RDM was so complete at its launch that they have nothing more to give it except a new finisher every expansion to the point where if this keeps going the finishers will be longer than the rest of the rotation. But everything before seems to have been through the wringer and the devs end up doubling down on unfun mechanics, toss away a lot that players loved in order to make it fit in neater boxes with other jobs in the same role, or everything piles up to the point where they take everything and throw it all out to start all over.

Keeping up with “quantity over quality” is just going to make balancing more and more difficult and will contribute to the continued homogenization of gameplay. They can certainly add new jobs, but I would much prefer we had a breather first so that we can have an expansion fixing everything that’s currently held together with duct tape and rubber bands.

Job bloat has made the devs take shortcuts for the sake of balance, and while things are arguably better in that regard than they were ARR-SB, smoothing over the rough edges for the sake of easier expansion of the job roster and prevention of jobs losing relevancy has cost us a lot of the things that made jobs more unique.

We’ve also lost job quests because the devs don’t have the time to write new stories for all of the jobs every expansion anymore. Leveling my favorite jobs and catching up with all the characters in their storylines and how they interact with the new regions being revealed was one of my favorite things about every expansion. We have role quests now, but you’ve got to be kidding yourself if EW’s blasphemy hunts were on the same level as what we had before with casts of NPCs that we’ve had more time with.

I think it’s harder and harder to justify the idea that new jobs will bring new players since new jobs require new players to reach the previous expansion on top of dozens of hours of other content unless they pay a fee. Overhauling what we have now and making everything better will do a lot more for player retention in my opinion, than just adding new jobs over and over while the older jobs end up getting “fixed” one at a time, often in the wrong direction from what players want.

For a new Tank, I have said it in the past but a tank using a Gunshield to have a primarily ranged attacks. While it wouldn't affect most fights, but anything with a stationary boss (like P7 for example) it would open up positioning.

Imagine a world where the player base stop defending job homogenization and said that it's ok for the dev team to take a whole expansion to allocate resources to the current jobs. Imagine.

Instead, we are excited about yet another class getting a gap closer.

Although I understand that we have been warned of this, and that it would make a lot of practical sense to pull back to only one job per expansion. Both to better allocate resources as well as to make the overall job design load more manageable.

However, Dawntrail especially has made it clear that new jobs are *the* selling point of each expansion. As the game is starting to run low on FF references, there are fewer things in the MSQ and instanced content to draw players in with nostalgia. So much of Dawntrail already feels quite generic: it's just a scattered collection of American tropes: golden city, dystopian city, two-party politics, tacos. Furthermore, job design has been getting narrower, shallower, and more duplicative, so it isn't demanding as much creativity as in prior expansions.

I think the reality of FFXIV's state of design is that there is substantial pressure for the devs to continue putting out two jobs per expansion. It just hedges their bets better than hanging an entire expansion on players wanting to play a single job. And you can even see it in the design of the recent expansions, as they have moved further and further into two major market demographic niches: edgey badass (GNB, RPR, VPR) and elegant/cute technicalist (DNC, SGE, PCT). It's all extremely calculated to cast as broad a net as possible and they would be risking a lot of player dropoff if they tried to only release one or the other.

So I actually think OP's prediction is not that far-fetched. We may see drop in job design quality, but I think as long as FFXIV is the only thing propping up SE financially they will continue to release two jobs just to try to maintain parity.
