I'd love mansions to have an option for a three floor layout with holes in the floors for us to put in our own staircases, there are already a few items we can use for that purpose and they could add more. As well as allowing us the option to place those holes in the floor where we please. Furthermore, options to have flat layout with no pillars, other floor plans including raised levels etc would also be cool but not very likely.

Would be nice if they allowed us to creat larger partitions that count as a single item also so we can make a solid wall without needing a half dozen of them.

Maybe you personally would only decorate the foyer if you had 2000 item slots but many people block off the Foyer because decorating the entire mansion with 400 items and make it look well-designed is extremely difficult due to the poor item to space ratio.
I don't think you understand what blocking off means. I can make a mansion the size of an apartment but with 400 decoration slots. That's like 4x the item to space ratio, right? So what if the space is there? You would have to clip through the walls to access it. The main designed room would have an insanely high item to space ratio; that's the point; that's why I want a mansion and not an apartment.

The difference between a house & apartment is an apartment has too many limitations
It has less item space and you can't glitch the way folks would like in the way we can with a house. Houses have bottom floors; apartments do not.

Not to mention the lack of outdoor furnishings! I’m really hoping that whatever they’re planning for this housing “mirage/glamour” will be so good that they’re inspired and encouraged to make a bunch of new housing layouts across the board. Apartments should have different sizes and layouts like houses do, with an “outdoor” balcony or courtyard. Some might even prefer them to houses if they had those kinds of options, and players have been asking for that for years.

I know everything else they’re planning for Dawntrail is probably more exciting for a lot of players than whatever they do with housing. But it would be nice to take a few minutes during a live letter sometime soon to clarify their statements on this “mirage/glamour” and ultimately lay out their vision for the next 10 years of player housing. Even now I think they underestimate how popular and how important it is to many players.

Smalls have less item space then mediums which have less item space then largest. Its not unique to Apts. Its a argument that holds true for every sized house that isn't Large. Should I complain that the player with the medium has 1 more floor then I do? And should the medium player complain that the player with a large has more space?

Yes, you can...legitimately... add-on support for housing isn't supported. In that regard it doesn't matter. HOWEVER given that void builds do exist, items can be placed from the outside of the "block" through the floor. So, actually yes you can replicate the method used in [plots]. JUst not to the same degree which I grant you, but again I also cannot glitch to the same degree to my small that I could with a medium, or glitch a medium to the same degree of a large.

(Here is my 2 floor Apt (FC Room) Click Here

I need you to list actual limitations. That are a hard "you simply cant do this because you're in a apartment and not a plot". To give an example.

Apartments/FC rooms cannot have tenants. That is a clear distinction between Apt/FC rooms and plots interiors

    Now you name me something.

My question then becomes why would I want a ward house if an apartment is literally just a House size apartment that is off the demolition timer?

You have to preserve the appeal of ward housing. Asking for an apartment to be the size of a house that is off the demolition timer is quite literally a better value proposition than a ward house. No smart same player is going to choose a ward house when they can demolish it within forty five days for not keeping up a permanent subscription. An outside yard with 20 slots or cross breeding is certainly not worth losing years of investment for not logging in for 14 days For a apartment that can be upgraded and is immune to inactivity demolition.

It creates this situation where the natural flow goes Apt< Small <Medium <Large.

    Turns into Small< Apts< Medium <Large

See, that’s kind of my point. Why does there have to be a hierarchy? Why do we only get 4 housing options (putting FC rooms and apartments as one because they’re the same size)? The one thing this housing system truly lacks - other than enough supply to satisfy the player base - is VARIETY!

Ward housing will always be more popular for some, and if people truly want to fight it out for a “prestigious” spot, more power to them. But for everyone else, who’s either failed to win a lotto, or just wants something different, finally create a way that everyone can have an equivalent housing experience. Let’s see apartments and penthouses and townhouses and artist’s lofts! Let’s see caravan homes set in the wilds of Thavnair! Let’s see a cabin in the Dravinian Hinterlands, or a cave like Matoya’s! Sure it sounds pie in the sky if you’ve never seen any other housing system than what this game provides. But these kinds of things are more than possible, and imo long overdue.

The argument that housing keeps people subbed is weak, given the long stretches that auto-demo gets suspended. And as I always point out, though it’s harder to measure, they could be making more money if they had a housing system that actually promised, one, that everyone could have a house and two, that everyone could have the type of house they want. From a marketing standpoint, you want to be better than your competitors to attract more customers. Others offer access to multiple different housing options without even requiring a monthly sub, and they’re not all cash shop either, though some of the more elaborate ones are. If it’s all about the money, then they’re losing out by not updating.

Its kinda a universality when you put it that way because humans put more value on bigger/ more expensive /rarer items. If something were released larger then mansions, that would automatically place it at the top of the hierarchy. If a instance were added that was smaller then houses, but bigger then apts then you would place it in-between Apt< X instance < smalls < medium < largest < Y instance.

It popular because its a finite resource, but its also unique that it allows you to have a visible footprint in the world. But theirs nothing equivalent about ward housing/ instanced housing. When one is objectively better then the other, more customization, less competition, uncoupled from the demo timer. This suggestion would be adding to that hierarchy.

I don't believe it is given my sub hasn't budged in 8 year because of it. If you offer me the option to leave and come back whenever I want and not have my investment deleted an replace. Why would I need to pay my sub fee every month if I feel like I could take a few months off. Where in this current system I have only 2 weeks to stay logged out before I lose one of my homes. So either I accept I lose my house if I want to take an extended break and Square gets nothing out of me until I come back. Or in this current system, I cant leave and they still get money/MAU/QAU on their reports.

If you quit because you cant get a house given apts exist and plenty other content, I'd consider that churn. And besides that's 1 less person you now have to bid against.

This leaves me with three questions: what appeal, why does it have to be preserved, and what is SE doing to make players want to have it preserved?

To me I think it is a unique housing system. Having a housing system that I share with other players in a dynamic neighborhood that changes over time inside and out according to the players. To strip that away to just an isolated instance that the entrance is going to be similar to the apartment system. (Likely to limit to friends list to avoid caps)

Is having a less dynamic, isolated and less unique system worth it just to give everybody a small instanced house breft of the unique interconnectivity feel on ward housing? No, IMO

I also think players come to appreciate the plots a lot more because it is a limited resource and you can lose it.

I'd rather not have another system stripped of what makes it unique. Sure not everyone gets a house. But you have access to housing even still.

I'm just not a fan of stripping away a unique system. And FF14 has been on a trend of that trading unique for accessibility.

    "Not everyone has a house!"

    And that's ok..
