That's your aetherotransformer. It's integral to the operation of the Machinist's arsenal. It's how the layman can operate the machines that Machinist uses. It is more your weapon than your gun is. It is not a lunch box.

So, why paladins can hide their shield with an invisible glamour? Isn't a shield integral to their skillset as well? Also before it was a thing, Machinists could hide that Gauss Barrel thing on top of their weapon.

I'd love to be able to hide not just the lunchbox, but the BRD's quiver as well, which in fact some quivers actually clip through the sheathed bow, which is wild to me.

Because a shield is a seperate unique slot in your character screen (the same slot is used by Disciples of the Hand and Land for their secondary tool), where as the MCH's aetherotransformer is a default appearence that is added with the Job equipped. GLA doesn't even start with a shield, they start with a sword only (the shield slot is empty, and technically isn't even compulsory for the class/Job - theoretically you could never equip a shield at all, although some GLA/PLD abilities require it, like Shield Lob, and so would be greatly limited gameplay wise, to say nothing of making the class/Job far less effective in party content).

ARC/BRD's quiver however is something different, that appearence is part of the bow's model and so changes according to whatever bow you happen to equip. To remove that would require every bow model in the game to be remodelled accordingly, something SE simply isn't going to do.

It is odd that they're so adamant about it being displayed. It personally doesn't bother me because I usually coordinate my MCH outfits with it in mind. I agree that folks should have the choice though. A simple text command could likely solve this easily. Yes it's an integral part of the jobs kit and is the reason mchs bullets and tools do so much damage but like others have said, emperor's new weapons exist so that's a lazy reason to deny people this option.

Also fully support having it's appearance match the weapons designs like bard and astro. Or at the very least if a weapon is not dyable, make the toolbox match the general color of the gun instead of the default silver.

It's a separate piece of gear that shows up on the character for starters. Beyond that it only goes into the Shield Bash and Shield Lob GCD skills (and used to go into Shield Swipe). All fairly minor and supplemental, much like the shield.

As far as Gauss Barrel goes, it wasn't always hideable when it still existed. It got requested to be hideable, and it became hideable later. This was due to them never designing the guns around it, causing it to clip and make almost all guns uniformly ugly. They eventually scrapped it wholesale when they got rid of the casting stances for Ranged physical. I miss it sometimes. Just another example in the ongoing Machinist reworks that go completely unexplained lore wise.

As for the Aetherotransformer... It is important to the class fantasy, because Stephanivien did not invent guns. He invented the aetherotransformer and brought in firearms instructors to have a gun as the mainstay in a Machinist's arsenal, because guns are easy to use. He does modify and make newer guns, like the Ferdinand, that rely on pressurized wind aether instead of gunpowder and the like, and for any such firearm, the aetherotransformer is how the Machinist has ammunition for them. You make bullets from your aether, using the aetherotransformer.

You're really splitting hairs here.

With the PLD shield hidden you can still use multiple abilities that require a shield and you can still visibly see your character blocking auto attacks with it, with a loud metallic "DONK" no less.

But it's simply out of the question to hide the MCH lunchbox because it makes your magic bullets in the lore.

That is very silly.
